Welcome to part 109 of my Never Ending Mixtape where the latest additions take us from 4,852 songs to 4,934 with the addition of  The Dardanelles by Glass Cheques - a glorious burst of sunshine indie guitar pop. Look out for a blog on them soon. Check their video at the foot of the blog.

Never Ending Mixtape part 108

 Welcome to part 108 of my Never Ending Mixtape!

The mixtape is hurtling towards the 5,000 landmark. I add songs regularly, with no thought to the flow or structure, unlike the mixtapes and CD's I would make in my younger days. 

As a result, my Never Ending Mixtape jumps from 4,802 to 4,852 with the addition of Brittle by my friend Alan's band Broken by Rock. 

Alan originally recorded it around 10-years ago, but it was only ever available on Soundlcoud. At the time, I described it as being like a fragile New Order. I've brought the song up with Alan a number of times over the years, as I really fell for the feel of the song and recording. I am delighted that Alan has (finally) decided to release Brittle to the wider world! I love the groove, the vocal melody and the delicious synth sounds, especially in the instrumental outro that I imagine being extended for a 12-inch version. 

Alan; The whole thing was recorded using synths and ableton live. I lost all the tracking when my old Mac died suddenly, so only have the master. I did think about re-recording it with the band but thought 'fuck it', just stick with the original version and not try to mess with it.

Brittle is New Wave, DIY, bedroom synth pop. I love it and hope you check it out.

Welcome to part 107 of my Never Ending Mixtape!

It's a burst of indie guitar pop in under 2-minutes, the first taster of her forthcoming album I Think That I Might Love You. Preorder a special Monorail edition with exclusive fanzine and bookmark. They describe it as ... a record of communal heart and power, cherry-red and glowing with life

I just noted that my Never Ending Mixtape is 10-years old in October! Should I put on a night to celebrate? My blog might reach 3,000,000 views around that time which is amazing.

 Welcome to part 101 of my Never Ending Mixtape!

Cover version of the month #104
Artetha Franklin covers Simon and Garfunkel

One day in December I was driving through the rain when Craig Charles stopped me in my tracks by playing Aretha Franklin's version of Simon & Garfunkel's classic Bridge Over Troubled Water.

I was spellbound! There are covers, and then there are Aretha Franklin covers! See my May 2017 blog on her rip roaring version of Respect by Otis Redding.

Her 1971 take on Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water is a masterclass in reinterpretation—transforming an already iconic song into something deeply personal, profoundly soulful, and utterly transcendent. WOW!

The original version by Simon & Garfunkel, released in 1970, is a shimmering melancholic folk-pop ballad. Paul Simon’s lyrics, inspired by gospel music, offer comfort and solace, while Art Garfunkel’s angelic voice delivers them with a serene purity. It’s a song that builds delicately, layering piano, strings, and harmonies until it swells into a grand crescendo. 

Listening to the song on headphone, it feels intimate, like Garfunkel is talking to you, like he empathises and cares. 

Then comes Aretha!

Recorded just a year after the original, Aretha’s rendition brings the gospel roots of the song front and centre, making it feel less like a folk-pop hymn and more like a sermon from the pulpit - the full embrace of the gospel choir, a heart-on-sleeve declaration of love and support. 

Aretha’s version begins with a soulful organ, immediately setting a richer tone. Then there’s her voice—raw, powerful, and infused with deep emotional, backed by a heavenly gospel choir. There is no rush, there is a lengthy instrumental passage from 26 seconds through to 1-minute 30 seconds, with a slow, soulful, slightly jazzy feel.  

Then, just before 2-minutes, Aretha sings;

When you're down and out

When you're on the street

When evening falls so hard

I will comfort you

Listen to the way she sings so hard - Goosebumps! 

Aretha sings with the conviction of someone who has lived every word, every heartbreak, and every triumph that the song embodies. This is spine tingling, life affirming stuff - listen to Franklin's voice rise with ease. Listen to the section where Aretha and her choir sing see how they shine in tandem. OOOFFFTT!

And the arrangement! The backing vocals! And that voice! Aretha isn’t afraid to go big! The choir backing her feels like a congregation lifting her up, and the rhythm section injects a subtle groove that wasn’t there in the original. By the time she hits the climactic Like a bridge over troubled water, it’s no longer just a lyric—it’s a declaration, a promise shouted from the mountaintop. 

While the groove is slow and chilled and the backing vocals are arranged beautifully arranged, Aretha is on fire - wild, radiant and impossible to contain! And it is A M A Z I N G to hear. What a sound! What a voice! The closing 90-seconds are utterly sublime.

Interestingly, Paul Simon himself praised Aretha’s version, once calling it the definitive recording of the song. 

So, which version is the best? That depends on what you’re looking for. Need a quiet moment of reflection, or a need to appreciate the art of songwriting in one of its finest moments? Go with Simon & Garfunkel. Need to feel uplifted, empowered, and ready to take on the world? Turn to Aretha. Both are exceptional performances of a truly magnificent song.

When I look back at the list of 100+ cover versions that I have blogged on, this is one of the very, very best.

I do love cover versions. One of the many beautiful things about music is how songs can be reimagined, reshaped, and reborn in ways that make us fall in love with them all over again.

Bridge Over Troubled Water won 5 Grammy's in 1971. Aretha performed her version as Simon & Garfunkel collected their awards.

Never Ending Mixtape part 96

Hello and welcome to the latest additions to my Never Ending Mixtape. If you are new, this is a Spotify playlist where I simply add songs that I enjoy with no thought behind the order in which I do. The complete opposite to the way I used to spend hours making a mixtape!

Speaking of which, I recently watched High Fidelity for the first time in a long time. It's such a brilliant film with a brilliant soundtrack and VERY realistic characters. Rob Gordon (the main character) talks about the art of making a mixtape a few time through the film and the importance of them. If Rob made you a mixtape, you meant something to him and he hoped the mixtape meant something to you.

I used to love spending evenings or wet/cold afternoons pouring through records and CD's to make mixtapes for people. It's a bit of a lost art. 

Anyway, in my Never Ending Mixtape ... we jump from 4,064 songs to 4,167 with the addition of Love Is Lost by David Bowie with James Murphy from LCD Soundsystem - it's a banger! There is a LOT of Bowie songs added to the mixtape due to me prepping to DJ at The Admiral Woods annual Bowie night. See previous blog for further details and a playlist of the songs I played.

Never Ending Mixtape part 94

Hello and welcome

Back in October 2016 I started my Never Ending Mixtape on Spotify, a platform that I had (after a great deal of scepticism and reluctance) signed up for. 

My idea was simple, I'd start a playlist and just keep on adding songs in no particular order and see what I could create. The complete opposite from my youth, when I would spend many wonderful hours pondering over tracklistings for mixtapes or mix CD's. 

I aimed to blog monthly on additions to the Never Ending Mixtape and I have pretty much stuck to that. I love playing my playlist on shuffle and marvelling at the songs the algorithms select. From someone who religiously bought music (either in physical format or via iTunes), it's quite something to reflect on how Spotify is now part of my life on virtually a daily basis!

My Never Ending Mixtape has now broken the 4,000 song mark, jumping from 3,972 songs to 4,012 with the addition of denver luna from the new Underworld album.

Never Ending Mixtape part 93

Hello and welcome to part 93 of my Never Ending Mixtape.

In my teens I'd spend hours making C90 mixtapes and then through my 20's I'd deliberate over tracklisting for mix CD's to ensure I maximised the time allowed. 

With this Mixtape (playlist) I simply add songs all the time! As a result, it's quite beautfully and naturally eclectic. I personally enjoy just sticking it on shuffle and seeing what comes up.

Next month should see the playlist breakthrough the 4,000 song mark! For now, we're up to 3,972!

Dream Baby Dream by Suicide

Released as a single back in 1979, Dream Baby Dream still sounds futuristic thanks to the songs fresh, dreamy, urgent, yet gentle feel. It's beautiful, sublime, vital music that goes straight to my heart. 

Riding in on a drum machine and keyboard/organ with a xylophone effect, the two-piece band of Martin Rev and Alan Vega conjure up something truly majestic. It never fails to captivate me, to stop me in my tracks, only for me to then press play again. 

Stretching out to 6-minutes 20 seconds, there is a lot of time and space to get lost in, to drift in, to dream in. The groove is consistent, but just seems to change slightly. It sounds like the duo hit record and captured it live, helping with the soul and timeless quality the song bursts with.

Alan Vega makes me want to go to bed early and dream. Quite an effect! At times, it sounds like the groove is having that impact on him too, like he is drifting off. Sometimes he just stops as if lost in the music, at other times he is almost mumbling as if falling asleep and dreaming.

Truly gorgeous, I hope you enjoy this song if you've never heard it before, or that you love revisiting it if you haven't listened in a while.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 29

Welcome to my 29th 60(ish) minute mix of songs that I can imagine playing in pubs like McChuills or The Variety Bar in Glasgow. They very much have an Anything Goes and Everything Flows policy and that's what I try and do with my playlists or when I occasionally venture out to DJ.

For this mix, I combined 2 playlists that I was working on. Both were getting somewhere, but not really going where I wanted them. So, in the same way Lennon and McCartney spliced a couple of songs together for A Day In The Life, I've spliced together 2 mixes.

The first section is very soul influenced, kicking off with an old gem but then going modern with Edinburgh's Joseph Malik, the incredible Michael Kiwanuka, Gabriels mixed by Greg Wilson, SAULT and a sensational cover by Niki & The Dove.

Moloko's smash hit The Time Is Now keeps the soulful flavour, but hints at a change in pace. Lou Hayter's sublime Time Out Of Mind eases things forward before we delve into all kinds of electronic goodness with the legendary Mr.Fingers, Underworld and The Chemical Brothers. Welcome to my 28th 60(ish) minute mix. This one was inspired by reading Sly Stone's autobiography and his mention of the Ray Charles song Let's Go Get Stoned. That led me on to Stoned Soul Picnic and things developed from there.

Sly and his band feature 3 times. Firstly with the super stoned groove of Everybody Is A Star, then the fabulous Everyday People. It's incredible that this song is only 2-minutes 19 seconds long! The mix closes with a 12-minute Sly & The Family Stone medley which I'd never heard before. Wow! 

Stone's style, his arrangements and his originality really set him and his band apart. They were one of a kind. I'd highly recommend his book.

Give You My Loving (live 1994) by Mazzy Star - I could happily listen to Hope Sandoval sing the phonebook.  I only recently discovered their Magic Hour live album - swoon!

Everest by Public Service Broadcast - The electronic band that take inspiration from old radio and TV recordings. They work something special up here.

Kinky Love by Nancy Sinatra - Discovered via Andrew Divine. Imagine walking into a record shop as a teenage boy and seeing this song title!

Let Me Go by SAULT - I'm still making my way through all the SAULT albums. They recently played live for the very first time and I REALLY hope they play Glasgow sometime.

Temptation Inside Your Heart by The Velvet Underground - Another discovery via Andrew Divine who I thoroughly enjoyed DJ-ing when I caught Belle and Sebastian playing live recently. I have the VU album of out-takes on CD but I can't say I have listened to it in ... probably decades! Possibly not this century! I will be listening again soon. This recording is from a Valentines Day session in 1968. I love how relaxed they all sound, there is a simple two chord groove and John Cale talks over things.

Love And Hate in a Different Time (Greg Wilson & Che Wilson Original Extended Mix) by Gabriels - An extended take on a true modern classic. Sublime.

All My Life by Evan Dando - melts my heart every time.

Tell Me What You See by The Beatles - I've found a new love for this song after it was covered on the What They Do To Me tribute album.

If I Never See You Again by Teenage Fanclub - also melts my heart every time!

You're Pretty Good Looking For A Girl by The White Stripes - Jack White comes across like a garage Paul McCartney. Super raw melodic pop! I was very fortunate for catch The White Stripes at King Tuts back in the day and this stood out for me.

How Do You Sleep by The Stone Roses - My love for The Second Coming album grows with every passing year. This is a gem.
