If I Had a Boat

Cover version of the month 115

Kieran Hebden and William Tyler cover Lyle Lovett

Driving west in the Autumn sunshine in late September, Huw Stephens announced he was playing a song from a new album by Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and William Tyler. It was an edited (radio) version of their song If I Had a Boat which opens their album 41 Longfield Street Late 80's.

I was instantly spellbound by the atmospheric finger picked acoustic guitar riffs mixed with ambient textures. This gorgeous instrumental was the absolutely perfect soundtrack as I drove towards the setting sun.

After the song finished playing, Huw announced that it was a cover of a Lyle Lovett song. As soon as I stopped driving, I checked it out.

Lovett's original was the opening song on his 1988 album entitled Pontiac. The lyricss are based on a true story about Lovett once trying to ride across a pond on a pony and wishing he had a boat.

The acoustic riff and slide guitar that Hebden and Tyler have stretched and played with is there, although, other than the intro, it is largely hidden behind the vocal melody and story that Lovett is telling by song.

And if I had a boat, I'd go out on the ocean

And if I had a pony, I'd ride him on my boat

And we could all together, go out on the ocean

I said me upon my pony on my boat

Lovett's song has a beautiful naive quality to it. The lyrics, melody and guitar are quite dreamy. Hebden and Tyler take that dreaminess and take it to the next level with their combined skills.

The cover version begins in a cool, calming and relaxing manner. You don't need a boat to drift off, this is gorgeous. Acoustic guitar is gently teased and eased into the ambient textures.

At 2-minutes 40 seconds, everything drops out to leave finger picked acoustic guitar, sounding warm, Autumnal and as if it is being played in a golden haze. Think Embryonic Journey by Jefferson Airplane.  Wow. I could listen to this all day.

So too, could Hebden and Tyler. Well, at least for 11-minutes!

Tyler, former guitarist with Lambchop, takes Lyle Lovett's guitar riffs and jams and expands them. Pedal steel with reverb comes in and then as the song edges past 6-minutes 30 seconds, Hebden brings the ambience back as the guitar fades a little and somehow seems to transform into synth sounds that bubble along for another 3 dreamy minutes. It's an utterly sublime cover - magical.

Lovett's original and the Hebden and Tyler cover of If I Had a Boat are added to my Everything Flows Cool Cover Versions playlist on Spotify which also features all of the songs listed below. Search for the title or CLICK HERE

Lone Swordsman

Trust me #94
Lone Swordsman by Daniel Avery

I always try to listen to 6music when I get the opportunity to work from home. More often than not, there will be a cool tune played that I've never heard before.

That happened on Friday when I heard a song on the Desert Island Disco that had me checking online to find out what it was and who it was by. It was Lone Swordsman by Daniel Avery.

Avery released  Lone Swordsman on September 1st 2020 as a poignant tribute to the late DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall, who passed away in February of that year. The track was released via Phantasy Sound as the B-side to Avery's single Dusting For Smoke, from his album Love + Light.

"I was in my studio the morning I heard about Andrew Weatherall's passing. The track Lone Swordsman is what formed that day. Andrew was a hero, a friend and someone who regularly reminded us all how it should be done, not to mention the funniest fucker around." Daniel Avery

As I imagine many of you reading this blog will know/have guessed, the title Lone Swordsman references Weatherall's project Two Lone Swordsmen, a collaboration with Keith Tenniswood .

Musically, Lone Swordsman is an dreamy instrumental, blending ambient textures with elements reminiscent of 90's club/rave culture. The emotive synths and understated rhythms had me (wrongly) guessing that it was an Orbital song when I first heard it. I love the feeling Avery has created.

The influence of Andrew Weatherall will be felt for decades to come. He was a true pioneer, fearless in his pursuit of different sounds, beats and textures.

"If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much room." Andrew Weatherall

Rill Rill by Sleigh Bells

Trust me #29

Sleigh Bells are apparently an intense noise pop band.

I'd never have guessed after hearing their 2010 single Rill Rill on Lauren Laverne's brilliant 6Music show one morning last month. I must have played it 50 times over the next week or so.

Although after checking the album Treats that the song features on, I can see where the intense noise description comes from!

Sleigh Bells are Alexis Kraus and Derek Miller, the latter of whom was in a metalcore band, while Kraus was in teen bands. The duo met in Brooklyn and quickly found they could work easily together.

But back to Rill Rill, which is easily the bands most popular song with over 38 million plays.

The groove is there from the very start. It's got a kind of Beta Band rawness and soul, there are bells, little vocal noises and then Alexis starts singing. The vocal melody just flows so naturally and beautifully.

Wonder what your boyfriend thinks about your braces

What about them?

I'm all about them

Six such straight A's

Cut 'em in the bathroom

Rill Rill such a cool song and Apple picked up on it, using it in a 2013 iPhone advertisement.

The coolness stems from the Funkadelic song Can You Get To That from their classic 1971 album Maggot Brain. It's a sublime use of sampling, taking the little riff that comes and goes in the Funkadelic tune and using it as the basis for a whole song, inspiring a new flowing vocal melody - gorgeous.

Bis and Cloth at the Old Hairdressers

Last night was one of those nights when everything seemed to come together. Bis, the DIY pop punk band who burst on to the scene in the 90's as the first unsigned act to play on Top of the Pops, were celebrating their new album, released on Last Night From Glasgow, the modern crowdfunded not for profit indie DIY label.

The rammed show in the Old Hairdressers was the second in a trio of sold-out weekend shows across Glasgow to promote Slight Disconnects, their first album in 5-years.

The Old Hairdressers is one of my favourite venues in Glasgow. It started out as a pop-up bar/arts venue and thankfully it has never lost that sense of atmosphere. Downstairs is sparse, open brickwork, the odd poster, some hastily assembled tables and chairs, fairy lights and a tiny bar. It is dimly lit and full of music fans - my kind of place.

Upstairs through a maze of stairs is what I describe to friends as a New York loft style party venue.  There is no stage, a tiny pop up bar in the corner, a merch table as you come through the door and a soundesk in the far corner. It's the kind of venue that some bands can take by storm, others might fall, there is no hiding behind a fancy light show or huge soundsystem at the Old Hairdressers, you've got to be on it.

Cloth at the Old Hairdressers by Brian Sweeney

Support for the night was fellow Last Night From Glasgow signings Cloth, a band turning more than a few heads thanks to recent 6Music and Radio Scotland sessions. The band have been releasing a song every couple of months, building a growing word of mouth buzz thanks to their sound which I can't help but liken to The XX in the way they play their guitars. Twins Rachael and Paul Swinton front the band playing guitars with Rachael on lead vocals. They are brilliantly backed by Clare Gallagher on drums who switched seamlessly between a standard kit and an electronic one.

This was the third time I have seen them and it was the best. Their reverb-y, sparse guitar riffs and melodies are all kinds of dreamy and Rachael's voice is one that is easy to fall for. Tripp was a highlight for me last night. Cloth probably haven't made it to double figures in terms of gigs, but on last nights evidence they are full of confidence, mystery and invention.

Rachael Swinton by Brian Sweeney

Check them out on all the usual online platforms. Enjoy watching them build towards their debut album later in the year. They head to London at the start of March to play the Sebright Arms and have announced Glasgow shows with Broken Chanter at the Glad Cafe and the Hug and Pint in May.

Bis at the Old Hairdressers by Brian Sweeney

On to the headliners. Bis were an absolute delight last night, full of punky teen energy, angst, humour and hooks. They didn't build up their set, more like they started in fifth gear with the opener Sound of a Heartbreak off their new album and then just kept their feet on the pedals.

Sci-fi Steve, John Disco and Manda Rin were in brilliant form, clearly enjoying themselves and that spread quickly and easily to the audience. The bounded, pogo-d, yelped, screamed, shouted and bopped their way through high energy pop. The chemistry between the three friends is crystal clear to see. Another newby There Is No Point was delivered ferociously, it sounds fantastic on vinyl but for me Bis are a band that really come into their own when you see them live.

Bis at the Old Hairdressers, picture by Brian Sweeney

Old Bis classics, that Steve and John both joked should have been massive but reached number 74 in the charts, were aired along with plenty of new songs. Kandy Pop was a 100mph romp and Eurodisco started the encore even faster and there was even more dancing and singing.

The Big Sunshine which closes the new album is an absolute beauty, written in memory of a lost friend, it has echoes of New Order and it sounded superb last night.

There was no chance that the band were getting away with a two song encore so they had one last blast with Kill Yr Boyfriend before a well deserved rest. They play the Hug and Pint in Glasgow tonight and after 3 sold out shows over a weekend I suspect there will be a larger Glasgow show later in the year. Oh and any festival bookers who happen to read this blog should book them up now.

Homemade Lemonade by Ette

Homemade Lemonade is the debut album by Ette, the solo project of Carla J Easton (my sister) from TeenCanteen. It has just been released on lovely bubblegum pink vinyl via Olive Grove Records. My daughter Zoe (Carla's niece) features on the cover.

It seems to be hitting a mark; the band had a 6Music session with Marc Riley on Monday night, host a launch party at the Old Hairdressers on Thursday and then have another session with Vic Galloway on BBC Radio Scotland the following week.

You can listen back to the Marc Riley session (for the next few weeks) HERE

Naturally, I'm a big fan, but also Carla's fiercest critic. Thankfully she never really gives me any cause to do that....at least not with her music!

I'm not the only fan of the album. The Skinny have described Homemade Lemonade as 'FAN. FUCKING. TASTIC; rage pop, exhilarating psychedelia and a treasure trove of sonic surprises', while Scots Whay Hae have described it as 'pop music at its very best' and Last Years Girl have talked of 'sunny melodies being put through a psychedelic meat grinder.'

Written and recorded in the summer and autumn of 2015, it is a rich, raw, diverse, clever and beautiful album. Carla recorded the songs with Joe Kane from Dr Cosmos Tape Lab at his garage studio - it was a chance for them to explore, experiment and have fun with the songs that Carla brought to the table. The album was recorded in only 5-days.

Joe produced the album, plays on every song (multi-instruments) and also co-wrote the disco groove summer tune Heaven Knows. The two hit it off - big time!

Lead single Attack of the Glam Soul Cheerleaders (Parts 1 and 2) opens the album and in 2 minutes 45 seconds we are introduced to the Ette sound (which varies from song to song but is definitely POP). Handclaps, motown-esque beats, backing vocals, urgency, hooks, choruses and a brilliant false ending/slight return.

A boy said to me L O V E
That is a word that sounds new to me

Hey little sister, spell it to the mister
L O V E means empathy

There were no rules and experimentation was encouraged by both parties. At this point it was all about recording - no thoughts of an album or band. Carla remembers arriving at Joe's studios in glorious sunshine to hear him experimenting with dub reggae beats and grooves and asking if Carla might have anything to go with them. Bonfires is experimental dub reggae pop psychedelia and it is brilliant. An inspired raga rap by Leroy 'Shines' Moncrieffe gives the song an extra edge.

The studio set up - synths, keys and effects!

Bird In The Sky has a glorious free flowng melody, all kinds of instruments combine to create a beautiful psychedelic euphoria.

Carla's ability to create a melody from nowhere combines with her clever use of humour and reflection on I Hate You Song. It's a ferocious stomper, the music matching the fire and anger in the lyrics and vocals.

Did you know I have got all night
If you feel up to a fight

Stars
Although they seem so far
It's where I want to go

I hate you but I hate that I once loved you even more
I've got a score to settle

Fireworks is the oldest song on the album, originally written away back in 2011 and BMX Bandits recorded and released the song on their In Space album. Duglas from BMX Bandits is a tremendous friend to Carla and an amazing supporter of her songwriting.

Carla revisits the song on Homemade Lemonade and produces a beautiful version complete with a trombone solo that melts the heart.

If Carla was going through a tough time and reflecting on I Hate You Song, then the heady rush of falling in love is perfectly captured on Heaven Knows. I fell in love with it from the moment I heard the first raw version that Carla sent me. I hope the piano, Harrison-esque guitar/synth, the strings, melody, lyrics, disco beat, hooks, chorus, outdo (very Jackson 5) and the stunning vocals will win you over too. This was a real highlight when they played live at Oran Mor in June. The song has space to breath, it flows, soars and is full of fun, love and urgency.

The way you make me feel
Is so unreal, it’s so unreal
The way you make me feel
When I’m with you, when I’m with you

Joe Kane and Carla are a pop match made in heaven. Joe's musical and production skills are incredible, check his work with Dr Cosmos Tape Lab; Beyond The Silver Seas was my album of 2015.

Joe and Carla

The vast majority of this album was written in a very short space of time; there is anger, reflection, love and memories.

I guess that when you're hurt then your Mum is someone you naturally turn to. My Mother Said has Carla singing her heart about phoning her (our) Mum and her telling her to come home and stay with her. She did and subsequently wrote this album and moved on.

My Mother said 'Carla when you go to bed, you will wake in the morning feeling rosie'
My Mother said 'Darling when you go to bed, you will wake in the morning feeling good'

The homemade psychedelic pop feel to the album comes across on Birthdays. A playful melody and more reflection.

I love the whole album but if I was asked to choose one highlight then I would go for Bones. Carla's voice is beautiful, the production again allows the song to breath, the melody flows superbly, the harmonies are glorious and the experimental music and performance is sublime. The lyrics are clever, stream of consciousness,

I only want to see the best in you
But you only give me all the rest of you
You're a constellation that I'll never know
Cause you're missing each and every star that glows

Spending Every Christmas Day With My Boy is another reflective song....this time it's not about a boy....but a cat!  Joe and Carla go into full on Spector mode with the beats, bells and jingles

I hear jingle bells when I think of you
And my heart is full of joy
Knowing I'm spending every Christmas Day with my boy

Homemade Lemonade is an inventive and eclectic album with loads to offer. It has led to Carla and Joe forming a band and I really hope it leads them back to the studio again.

Francis the Great - Look Up In The Sky

Click on the YouTube link below and listen to Look Up In The Sky, an exceptionally fresh, beautiful and funky track by Francis the Great that I heard on Lauren Laverne’s headphone moment today.

It is over 12-minutes of stretched out afro-funk-soul by the best French and Cameroonian musicians from the time with a 7-year old singing/talking over the top. It was recorded in France in 1977

When I look up I see the birds
In the sky I see birds fly

Look up, look up, look up in the sky

The groove is infectious, punctuated by horns, the vocal is so pure - like only a 7-year old could do, there are some crazy synth solos over the top of the funky guitar, the beats are relentless, keeping it all going and keeping it all together.

The song is over 12-minutes long and is one of 2-tracks on an album(?) entitled Ravissante Baby. The other song is the title track that is also over 12-minutes long.

But yeah, take Lauren’s suggestion and stick your headphones on and then click below for the incredible Look Up In The Sky and enjoy.

Spinage a Trois - Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show

On Saturday night I was interviewed by Craig Charles for his Funk and Soul show on 6music. It is always on in our house on a Saturday evening if we happen to be in. With a young daughter and another baby on the way - we are certainly in a lot more than we used to be!

Charles is electric, a real livewire bursting with enthusiasm for the music and his listeners. The music is incredible - classics you'll know, rarities that you'll want to know and just quality. Track for track it has to be the best show on British airwaves.

I had emailed the show for their 'Spinage a Trois' section - where a listener gets to choose 3 songs, talk a little and they get played on the show. You can listen here (for a while). I'm on at 1 hour 11 minutes in.

The songs I chose were;

Looking For You - Garnett Mimms
I always come back to this song every so often. A heart has been broken and the guy just can’t get over it. Bass, beats, piano, strings and heart tugging vocals backed by gorgeous harmony, all combine in a glorious manner. The lyrics are so simple yet they say so much.

Each verse contains something a little different to highlight the pain and longing. Each verse is ended by the amazing ‘Baby I Need You'.

Just Loving You - Ruby Andrews
I discovered this song through my good friends Chris and Jillian. They asked me to dj at their wedding and asked for soul, 60’s beat,a little bit of funk and disco. Just quality tunes. They had complete trust in me and the only request they put in was for their first dance - I’d never heard of it and i have to admit I had tears in my eyes when I listened to it. I thought my wife and I had done well with Baby, I Love You by The Ronettes for our first dance but this is the best first dance song for a wedding I have been to. It was perfect for Chris and Jill - Chris is a real mod from the Highlands and Jillian is a sweet cool indie chick.

Just a beautiful song that says so much in a little over 2 and a half minutes.

Just loving you
I found that life has a brighter side
Since I found you
Oh how your love has turned the tide, yeah

Cause your love has been so good to me
You gave your heart so willingly
I love you, oh, I'll never leave you never, oh no no never,

You made me see
Just how wonderful love can really be
Til I met you
I never knew I had so much love in me, yeah

Yes you brought the best things out in me
The things I thought could never be
Ended all my misery, I'm satisfied
Just loving you

Sweet baby yeah
Sweet baby yeah

Don’t Leave Me This Way - Harold Melvin and The Bluenotes
It really doesn’t get much better than this for me. A lengthy intro, incredible musicianship throughout, heartfelt lyrics delivered with raw passion and soul and a HUGE uplifting chorus. I don’t DJ as much as i used to but this always go down a storm. The jamming at the end on the full version is just ridiculously good. So loose, soulful and funky

Don't leave me this way
I can't survive, I can't stay alive
Without you love, oh baby
Don't leave me this way
I can't exist, I will surely miss
Your tender kiss
So don't leave me this way

Oh baby, my heart is full of love and desire for you
So come on down and do what you've got to do
You started this fire down in my soul
Now can't you see it's burning, out of control
So come down and satisfy the need in me
Cos only your good loving can set me free

Five for Friday 12/08/11

Completely off the cuff today although starting with this beauty from the past as Lauren Laverne just played it on 6 music.

Followed by some genius by Damon Albarn;

And Teenage Fanclub playing with Edwyn Collins at Mono!

3 beautiful minutes of gorgeousness from Big Star.

And we end with abit of Hot Chip - great tune.
