Anything Goes & Everything Flows 29 60-minute DJ mixes and playlists

I recently spent an evening scrolling through my Spotify playlists and realised that I had a few of my 60-minute Anything Goes & Everything Flows playlists uncompleted. I published the first one back in June 2021 and my 29th in January 2024. Then, for whatever reason, I stopped.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows is a series of playlists I created that were loosely based on imaginary DJ sets I would play in favourite pubs of mine, like McChuills on High Street or The Variety in Sauchiehall Street. Both pubs encourage DJ's with eclectic taste and knowledge to play music that spans a number of genres to soundtrack the incredible nights that take place in their bars.

While I'm rarely up in Sauchiehall Street these days (what a sorry state it is in!), I still get to McChuills semi-regularly and love the vibe and atmosphere that the DJ's help to create.

Looking back through the blogs and listening to some of the playlists, I realised how much fun I had creating them on an almost monthly basis. This was an excuse to dig deep into my own knowledge of music and also dive headlong into Spotify to discover all kinds of weird and wonderful music.

Over the years I've DJ'd at weddings, for friends birthdays, in bars and put on my own nights. I love to DJ! Playing music to people and generating a reaction is a real buzz. Don't hesitate to get in touch if you need a DJ and like the music I blog about.

I'll always try to get people dancing, however these playlists/mixes go a little deeper, a little more left field, while still dropping in a well known crowd pleaser's from time to time.

Here are links to the first 29 Anything Goes & Everything Flows playlists/mixes that I published. Numbered and named after the first song in the mix.

Dig in and enjoy.

We are 1 of 100 playlist

A number of years ago I was looking for cool t-shirts and sweatshirts online. Search results threw up We are 1 of 100, a company based in Glasgow who created limited edition and numbered clothing. There were only 100 of each design - COOL!

My first purchase (maybe 5-6 years ago?) was a navy Silicone Soul sweatshirt in celebration of their classic Right On, Right On 12-inch single. I own a copy and have just noticed one is selling for £80 on eBay!

I was never hugely into clubbing, I've always preferred pubs with cool DJ's, like McChuills or The Variety, but I did have a few years of late nights at The Arches around the time this song was released. Inspired by the strings on Curtis Mayfield's Right On For The Darkness, Silicone Soul's Right On, Right On was absolutely everywhere in Glasgow in 2001/2002.

The sweatshirt looked great, the vibrant pink text stood out from the navy blue, and it felt fantastic, super soft and comfy. I still wear the sweatshirt regularly. If anything, it's getting better with age.

Since then, I've bought a number of things; a few hoodies, a one-off sweatshirt design that Richie (founder and designer at 1 of 100) was playing with but never took through to creation, a cracking British Racing Green sweatshirt with a smiley face logo on the front and Acid House Cycling Club on the back and at least half a dozen t-shirts including designs by Eyes of Others, Joel Gion and my sister Carla!

The designs and the quality of the clothing is one of the reasons I keep buying from 1 of 100, another reason is the online (and in-person) community that has formed around the brand, owner, taste and values. This was particularly important during lockdown, when Richie and like-minded people would share music they loved. All of a sudden I was connected to loads of cool people with excellent taste in music, art and clothes!

Richie had a small studio in The Cooperage on the Southside of Glasgow, just off Pollokshaws Road. It was also technically his shop, but there wasn't a great deal of space to design, create, package and have a shop, especially as 1 of 100 developed.

So ... 1 of 100 now has a new home at 63 Old Castle Road, Glasgow, G44 5TG. To celebrate, they held a little instore bash one Saturday earlier this year and invited customers signed up to their mailing list to put their name down if they fancied playing some records in a 45-minute slot. Richie intends to do this kind of thing semi-regularly.

I jumped at the chance to dig out some records and head down, especially with my birthday round the corner! Time to treat myself!

Here is a playlist of the records (* = played) I took along - We are 1 of 100 playlist Maybe I'll play the others next time! Especially Right On, Right On!

69 Police and Hey Lisa

Trust me #82 & 83
69 Police and Hey Lisa by David Holmes

David Holmes is DJ-ing in McChuills this Friday night ... and I'm not going! I was, but having been a little run down with a bug since last Thursday, I decided to sell my tickets - cost price naturally! At my age, going on a mad night out while not at 100% isn't a good idea!

Holmes is someone I have admired since my friend Reddy introduced me to his debut album This Film's Crap Lets Slash The Seats way back in 1995. Reddy also fell for the 1997 follow up Let's Get Killed which included snippets and samples of audio recordings Holmes made while walking around New York City. It was kind trippy and totally cool.

But it was Holmes 3rd album, Bow Down to the Exit Sign, released in 2000, before I truly fell for the Northern Irish DJ, electronic artist, producer and film composer.

Two song in particular stood out. 69 Police is flowing gem, layered beautifully to take listeners on a journey. The synth riff is utterly sublime. A couple of year ago I was fortunate to DJ in McChuills on a Sunday evening and this went down a treat.

The production is insane; the spoken word intro is turned up high in the mix, then the synth sounds and beats kick in, leading to the a glorious synth riff with lovely squelchy sounds interspersed. Holmes layers things and keeps it all going. I doubt that David will drop this into his set, but any regrets I have on Saturday night would be considerably multiplied if he did!

The dreamy atmospheric Hey Lisa closes the album to leave you floating, the mellow beats and swirling strings are absolutely gorgeous. Holmes works real magic here, layering guitars, string samples, synth riffs and bubbles, and what sounds like a xylophone ... weaving them in and out of each other beautifully.

Hey Lisa is a piece of music that never fails to move me. What a way to close the album, listen to the strings as the song ebbs towards the end. Majestic.

69 Police and Hey Lisa are both added to my Trust Me playlist; search for Everything Flows - Trust Me on Spotify or CLICK HERE

3 DJ's at Mono

On Saturday 7th October, some friends and I put on a night to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Teenage Fanclub's Thirteen album. The idea was to play the album in full at Mono (where the band recently played for the launch of new album Nothing Lasts Forever) in a kind of 'in person' listening party style.

Over a months worth of rain fell on Saturday, resulting in trains being cancelled and the entire Scotrail network closing at 9pm. It wasn't a great night to be putting on a free event!

Still, Barry, Alan and I drove in and stuck to non-alcoholic beers and played records from 7.45-11.15pm and had a good chat.

Most of the crowd were in for the amazing vegan food that Mono offers up. None of us were surprised by the messages we were receiving from friends saying they were staying in due to the weather, or indeed, that they couldn't get to Glasgow.

Here is what we played - spot doctor Alan Clarke's handwriting! I've created a playlist of all the songs that are on Spotify. Everything apart from the Chuck Jackson, J Walter Neero and KiDD songs.

Dig in and enjoy over 3-hours of tunes played. I've left off Teenage Fanclub's Thirteen. That deserves to be played on its own.

Anything Goes and Everything Flows DJ Mix 27

Hey

It's been a couple of months since my last 60-minute mix.

I've gone for something a little different this time; starting and ending the mix with a couple of cool, dreamy, acoustic yet psychedelic songs. In between there is a riot of 60's beat group and psychedelia and somehow Cornershop find their way in too!

I've decided to title this mix Embryonic Journey after the sublime opening song by Jefferson Airplane, as everything that follows really stemmed from this blissful instrumental. I first heard it on the programme The Wonder Years when I was a kid. I find it so peaceful - very welcome given the chaotic world that we are living in.

I Think I'm In Love

Trust Me #55
I Think I'm In Love by Spiritualized  (and the Chemical Brothers vocal remix)

On Sunday 18th June I fulfilled a long held ambition when I got to DJ at McChuills, my very favourite pub in Glasgow. It was an honour to play alongside one of the bars resident DJ's - Stevie Elements. I had almost as much fun raking through his cases of 7-inch singles as I did playing.

And I also enjoyed looking through my own records while preparing my DJ bag for the night. I was determined to play an eclectic set, in keeping with my Anything Goes & Everything Flows monthly mixes.

My mission when DJing is to get people dancing/singing/nodding their heads and showing signs of appreciation and I particularly love when people take the time to come up and ask what song I played if they didn't know it. Thankfully I achieved all of the above, including words of acknowledgement from another McChuills resident, the legendary JP who came up to chat a couple of times and I also shared a beer at the bar with him while Stevie was taking one of his turns on the decks.

I played Chemical Brothers remix of Spiritualized's I Think I'm In Love and a couple of people came up to ask who it was. It is an incredible song and sounded out of this world on the big speakers; psychedelic sonic perfection that takes off for the sun and urges you to hold on for the ride.

The original version is on Spiritualized's 1997 classic album Ladies and Gentleman We Are Floating In Space. It's an absolute masterpiece, from the elaborate prescription pill style packaging to the melting pot of music and the sound of Jason Pierce's heart breaking spread over 70-minutes. NME's Paul Moody hailed the album as a seismic tour de force, while the Melody Maker praised it as one mind blowing perspective-fusing supernova of an album .. that redefines notions of bittersweet and love-hate to the point where everyday emotions seem very small indeed. I'll save a blog on that for another time.

I Think I'm In Love burns beautifully slow to begin. A continuous note drones for almost a full minute, squelchy guitar sounds are played over the top before a gentle piano is introduced, some mouth organ and then Pierce begins to sing.

Sun so bright that I'm nearly blind

Cool cause I'm wired and I'm out of my mind

Warms the dope running down my spine

But I don't care about you and I've got nothing to do

Pierce's voice sounds blissfully damaged as the Spiritualized sound is layered delicately and delightfully around him. After he sings I don't care about you for the second time the layers drop out leaving Pierce to sing I've got nothing over a few piano notes.

Everything stops and then the next stage of the song begins, beats are introduced and there is more of a groove, allowed to flow and develop for almost 2-minutes and then Pierce is back with call and response vocals that are catchy and funny. Very probably self depreciating.

I think I'm in love

Probably just hungry

There are times when Pierce sounds lost in the groove his Spiritualized orchestra has conjured, letting out little come on yelps in the background, as if he is urging them to keep going.

I think I want to tell the world

Probably ain't listening

Horns, guitar, synth, piano, guitars, drones, beats and bass. The way everything is layered together is sublime. Ending with a gospel choir singing I think I'm in love repeatedly, the song is faded out. I imagine Pierce would never have wanted it to end.

And then The Chemical Brothers get their hands on it!

Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons really do work their magic on their remix, producing something super trippy and dazzling. Spiritualized stop everything to go from part 1 to part 2 of the song, while The Chemical Brothers build and tease, almost sounding as if they are getting all their equipment read to blast off for space.

After the beats have kicked in they bring everything back to allow Pierce to sing;

I think I can fly

Probably just falling

Chemical by name, chemical by nature. This remix is a match made in heaven. Rowland and Simons seem to have dipped Pierce's vocals into pot of LSD and MDMA, thrown in some synths for good measure to see what happens and then dived in after them. Their remix is spacey, trippy, cool and euphoric. The brothers really do work it out.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 23

Hello and welcome to number 23 in my series of 60-minute mixes/playlists.

When I started this series I said that it was inspired by old visits to favourite haunts of mine like The Variety / McChuills in Glasgow. In my younger days I would regularly visit one of those pubs on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, where DJ's would work their magic to get the crowd in the mood for moving on to a club.

More often than not, I'd opt to just stay in the bar.

In these magical bars that I frequently visited through my 20's, the DJ's would spin incredibly cool tunes, many that I had never heard before, causing me to go up and ask the DJ what they were playing. McChuills and The Variety were places where the music policy was very much anything goes and everything flows.

It's kind of been a (not so) secret ambition of mine to DJ or put on a night on McChuills for a long time. So I am super delighted that Stevie Elements, one of the bars residents, has asked me to DJ alongside him on Sunday 18th June from 5-9pm.

As it's Fathers Day, this will be my little treat to myself after lunch with my daughters. Lynn and I had a great night in McChuills last summer and danced away to tunes Stevie was playing. It's an honour to be asked to play.

Stevie has given me the choice of DJ-ing digitally or with vinyl. While the flexibility of DJ-ing digitally is incredibly enticing (not to mention the fact I wouldn't have to lug record bags around), the excuse to dig into my record collection is simply too great. So I'm opting for a vinyl set.

It would be great to see you there for a beer and possibly even a dance!

Anyway, on to this months 60-ish minute mix! You can find it on Spotify by searching for Everything Flows DJ Mix 23 or by CLICKING HERE. Full tracklist below.

Lots of recent discoveries here. A few groovers, the mix ebbs and flows with funky stuff and some truly euphoric vocal performances. There are a couple of old faves by Ruby Andrews and Gladys Knight & The Pips and from my latest finds I'm particularly enjoying Stay Here With Me by Sandra Richardson and Fly Me To The Moon by Lyn Collins. The strings in Forever And A Day by Mel & Tim are sensationally sublime. The closing song is mysteriously credited to various artists on Spotify. If anyone reading this knows more about it then please get in touch.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 22

Hello and welcome to my 22nd in a series of 60-minute playlists/mixes.

With these mixes I  try to create the vibe I would get from entering The Variety / McChuills in Glasgow on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night, where DJ's would (and still do) work their magic to get the crowd in the mood for moving on to a club, or in my case, often opting to just stay in the bar.

In these magical bars that I frequently visited through my 20's, the DJ's would spin incredibly cool tunes, many that I had never heard before, causing me to go up and ask the DJ what they were playing. McChuills and The Variety were places where the music policy was very much anything goes and everything flows.

My last few mixes have been very soul heavy, so with this one I really did just go with the flow. We kick off with a sublime instrumental by the super talented Gruff Rhys, then we have divine Whyte Horses before some old faves by The Avalanches, The Go! Team and Jurassic 5.

They still sound so fresh!

Elsewhere we have a brass band covering Joy Division, retro dance sounds by The Bees, a moment of euphoria by Flaming Lips and some blissful electronic music to get lost in by Underworld and LCD.

Throw in the super cool Misdemeanor, The Funk Brothers, Tim Burgess fronting The Chemical Brothers and an instrumental of The Charlatans Sproston Green to close and ... it's a pretty cool eclectic mix.

Enjoy.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 20

Welcome to my first Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix of 2023. If you're new to this series, it's basically me compiling a 60(ish) minute mix/playlist that I would love to hear/play in one of my favourite pubs in Glasgow - McChuills.

McChuills is an incredible music pub. It lives and breathes it. DJ's, bands, posters, artwork, nights, days ... Located on High Street, just on the edge of the Merchant City, it's just nicely out of the way of anything else, though still very central.

This months mix definitely has a McChuills vibe of northern soul, mod and just a dash of funk. It's got old faves from previous mixes like Keep On Keepin' On and I Believe In Miracles, but also plenty of recent discoveries such as the fantabulous version of Sympathy For The Devil by Sandie Shaw. Look out for that featuring in my Cover of the Month series in the near future!

If Googa Mama doesn't have you dancing and smiling then please check your pulse.

I'm really pleased with this mix. 23 songs in 66-minutes. It packs a lot in for sure! ENJOY!

Everything Flows 1,000 blogs party

On Saturday night I put on a wee night at La Chunky Studio in The Hidden Lane, just off Argyle Street in Glasgow. In hip happening Finnieston.

I put 40 tickets on sale and within a couple of social media posts, all were bought in just a few days, even though the line-up was a secret.

There were a couple of changes to the line-up in the weeks leading up to the event and unfortunately a train strike meant a few people couldn't attend, but everything came together on the night.

I first came across La Chunky through my sister Carla's first band Futuristic Retro Champions. They recorded an EP in the studio and also played a very memorable gig outside on a glorious sunshine day for the old Hidden Lane Festival way back in 2010. I've stayed in touch with Ronan, one of the owners and was delighted when he said he'd be up for hosting a small night.

My friend Phil DJ'd before, between and after the live acts, wowing us all early on with an edit of Bowie's Young Americans. The lights were dimmed and friends started to stream in to the back room of La Chunky which had been turned into an intimate venue for the night.

Carla went on first, opening with the beautiful Dreamers On The Run and then the playful Impossible Stuff. I love the feeling of Dreamers On The Run and the line we chased down our fears with a smile, chased bad demons into exile.

Jenna always used to generate a reaction in the Futuristic Retro Champions days and it did again on Saturday night, but in a different way. The tale of friends forgetting worries for nights out sounded beautiful, stripped back to just Carla and her trusty Juno keyboard.

New song Sugar Honey Ice Tea hit a mark. Carla told of how she wrote it after being afraid to walk home alone in the dark and a few people in the crowd told me how the lyrics resonated with them. The demo is on a Fanclub CD that we've been playing in our car and the girls sing along with it as it's super catchy. Thankfully, they don't know that the lyrics have a darker edge. Sadly, one day they will. There is still so much to be done to help make women feel safer when walking alone at night.

Closing with Poster Paints Number 1 ahead of the album being released next week, Carla's voice sounded as crystal clear as I have heard it. I'm so glad Carla could play and open the night.

Then next up was my band Starboard Hazes. I think we just about passed the audition! Raw n fun indie pop. It's been such a rewarding experience to form a band. Initially it was just my friend James and I working on old songs I had written many years ago. Then, after recording an EP, we decided we wanted to play and recruited James' friends Andy on bass and Jamie on drums. We only got together for the first time on 1st September and we immediately gelled.

We played; 1. Out Of My Mind 2. Yeah! 3. Keep On Dreaming 4. Beta Band Blues (with Ronan on trombone) 5. Kicking Our Heels 6. Reflected Sunlight

I think we'd had 6 practice sessions. Maybe just 5. But we played well (a few mistakes but nothing major). We only had one very quick practice with Ronan on trombone for our song Beta Band Blues, but he was great, playing on the balcony section and jamming brilliantly (video below). We loved it and it was nice to receive some positive feedback on the EP and show.

Stephen Farrell AKA Stephen Solo has featured heavily over the course of this blog. With his band Sonny Marvello and then under his solo guise, releasing majestic DIY pop recorded on his iPhone/iPad - in his car, in his bathroom, behind his sofa, under bed sheets ... sublime dreamy melodies, heartfelt lyrics, insane imagination, all kinds of sounds and ideas.

In typical Stephen fashion, he'd spent ages working on backing tracks, beginning with him recording his worries about playing live for the first time since 2019. It broke the ice beautifully. Humour and honesty.

Suddenly Heaven soared with ease, new song Losing It Over You was super catchy and I'd forgotten how good Plastic Heart from the Pii album is. The way Stephen switched from vocal effects to the purity of his voice sounding super dreamy reminded me of Damon Albarn's work with Gorillaz.

Behind Your Eyes was one of the first iPhone recordings that Stephen sent me a number of years ago (must have been 2015) and I urged him to do more. The Albarn reference above was one that first came to me on the beautiful refrain.

Behind your eyes, I'll be waiting

It's so dreamy, you could float away with the melody. The little synth riff in the background is gorgeous. Then you have the crazy but clever verses.

Sonny Marvello's Whispering Song was utterly magical. The way Stephen pulled back from his microphone to sing from the bottom of his heart was spine tingling.

Who are you, who are you to hold me in your arms?

Crying Because, backed only by a blue ukulele was fragile and beautiful, interrupted slightly by someone having a sneezing fit.

And then we had some audience participation for Sonny Marvello's hit that never was - Made of Magic. The super catchy pop had everyone singing the chorus M - A - G - I - C what you're made of, is magic.

It was then time to dance the night away with DJ Phil Redfearn on the decks. Phil immediately kicked off with Come Together by Primal Scream. The Weatherall mix from the classic Screamadelica album. You'll see from the video below that he really got the party started!

We  know that music is music, gospel, gospel, gospel

People did come together for live music and to dance. And it was brilliant. The night ended with an encore, after shouts of one more tune, of Phil playing Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance followed by everyone getting together to hug in groups to The Beatles All You Need Is Love.

We must do it again.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ mix 16

Hello and welcome to my 16th 60-minute DJ mix where I apply the philosophy that Anything Goes & Everything Flows, attempting to create a mix that would go down well in the likes of The Variety & McChuills.

Those 2 bars were scene for many a memorable night 'back in the day' and I'd often prefer to just stay in the bars all night listening to the DJ there rather than go to a club.

I do focus on soul and funk this month, trying to create a real groove (easy when you're playing Sly & The Funk Brothers) but also providing some euphoric moments courtesy of The M.V.P.'s (pretty sure I first heard this song in McChuills at a Friday Street preclub), a sensational cover by Peggy Lee and the irresistable soul pop of The Jackson 5.

I hope you enjoy this mix. Search for Everything Flows DJ Mix 16 on Spotify or CLICK HERE

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 15

Welcome to my monthly 60-minute DJ mix where I like to throw in an eclectic bunch of tunes and see if my motto of Anything Goes & Everything Flows works!

These mixes are inspired by DJ's I would catch in Glasgow bars like McChuills or The Variety Bar back in my younger days when I'd often go for a pre-club night and end up just staying in the bar.

I was in McChuills a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday night and my wife and I ended up dancing at the end of the bar as DJ Stevie Elemements played a great mix of everything from The Sonics to Madonna, with everything in between. It was so good to hear brilliant music played loudly and to see people responding. Strangers (in some cases)  coming together through music.

We kick off with some laid back soulful & jazzy grooves before going on a real mix from the super cool sounds of Liquid Liquid, a detour into Mexican spiced rock, outrageous soul, electro pop, classic Bowie, crazy pop courtesy of The KLF before ending with the euphoric Loaded by Primal Scream.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix Summer 2022

Welcome to an extended Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ mix/playlist where I go way beyond my 60-minute mark and stretch out to over 2-hours in a summer/heatwave special.

I hope you're enjoying the sun, I also hope you're staying safe. And please, do what you can to help protect this wonderful world we live in before it is too late. We are living in a Climate Emergency, we need urgent change and we need it now.

My daughter Zoe and I marched in Glasgow during COP26 last year. We felt hopeful, we felt like we were part of a movement. We are part of a movement, but we need governments across the world to take much more swift, urgent & decisive action.

Governments worldwide can find money for weapons, or for health emergencies like COVID. The Climate Crisis is the biggest health emergency we will ever face.

Back to the music. Most (if not all) of these songs will have featured on previous Anything Goes & Everything Flows mixes. So it was nice to bring some real sunshine favourites together.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 14

Patti Jo - Make Me Believe In You

Welcome to my 14th 60-minute DJ mix under the title of Anything Goes & Everything Flows.

This series has quickly become my most viewed blogs with most of the 13 to date being viewed 1,500 + times, with quite a few well over 2,000. So thanks if you read the blog and enjoy the mixes/playlists.

My idea was to create a monthly 60-minute playlist/mix to try and create the vibe I would get from entering The Variety / McChuills in Glasgow on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night. DJ's would work their magic to get the crowd in the mood for moving on to a club, or in my case, often opting to just stay in the bar.

In these magical bars that I frequently visited through my 20's, the DJ's would spin incredibly cool tunes, many that I had never heard before, causing me to go up and ask the DJ what they were playing. McChuills and The Variety were places where the music policy was very much anything goes and everything flows.
Tom Moulton, two of his mixes feature in this playlist

I've tried to create mixes that are 60-minutes in length with real thought behind the song selection and order. Search for Everything Flows DJ Mix 14 on Spotify or CLICK HERE

This month has a soul and funk flavour. There are dirty grooves, but also some really euphoric moments, notably Thelma Houston tearing through I've Got The Music In Me and Tom Moulton getting that little extra through his mix of one of my all-time favourite songs - Don't Leave Me This Way. Moulton also really works on the groove on Al Green's classic Let's Stay Together, while Otis Clay's The Only Way Is Up will receive it's own blog in the near future!

Dig in and enjoy. This is probably my favourite 60-minute mix so far.

Jazzie's Groove - Soul II Soul

Make Me Believe In You - Patti Jo

Let's Stay Together (Tom Moulton mix) - Al Green

Love Having You Around - Stevie Wonder

The Only Way Is Up - Otis Clay

Ain't No Mountain High Enough - Inner Life

Moira Jane's Cafe - Definition Of Sound

It's A Shame (My Sister) - Monie Love

I've Got The Music In Me - Thelma Houston

Got To Get You Into My Life - The Beatles

Don't Leave Me This Way (Tom Moulton mix) - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
