Everything Was Beautiful

Jason Pierce, J Spaceman, is back. Somewhat surprisingly.

Having been at deaths door, having said that 2018's And Nothing Hurt would be his last album, Pierce and his latest incarnation of Spiritualized is back with a stunning 7-song album - Everything Was Beautiful.

The bones of the album stretch back to an exceptionally fertile period Pierce experienced in 2013-14 when he wrote and demo'd enough songs for a double album. It's taken almost 10-years for the demos to be reworked and find their way into the wider world across 2 albums, with 3.5 years between them.

A Spirtualized album should always be celebrated. Indeed, J Spaceman's albums always are. We know what we're likely to get, but every single time we are moved by lullabies, melodies, invention, droning guitars, mantra's, dreamy and psychedelic soundscapes to get lost in.

We're moved by Pierce pouring his heart out into his records with his lyrics of love, loss, heartache, drugs, death and reflection. They touch us deeply.

Beginning with a long intro, including morse code, Always Together With You eases us into the album. Never mind cold water therapy, this is like easing into a nice warm soothing bath. Pierce in full on dreamy romantic, anything is possible in love, mode

If you want a rocket ship, I would be a rocket ship for you

If you want another world, I would be another world for you

At 2-minutes 28 seconds the song lifts into the chorus with gorgeous backing vocals. As the song develops we get the sublime vocal layers that Pierce finds effortlessly. The instruments are also built up, like a modern day Pet Sounds. It's stunning, it's Spiritualized, it's just sublime, refreshing and suddenly everything seems better.

Best Thing You Never Had (The D Song) is spacey rock n roll with an infectious guitar riff, rattles of a tambourine in all the right places, flowing into a chorus with gospel singers lifting things in that classic Spiritualized way. There is a rip roaring guitar solo, a breakdown, lift and an extended intro, a tight rhythm with guitars and horns allowed to go crazy.

Honey, you're eyes rolled back, the best thing you've never done

Oh and your wasted time, you best let the water run

And then, with Let It Bleed (For Iggy) we're back into the beautiful dreamy lysergic lullaby space that Jason Pierce can create, interrupted dramatically as the song crashes (from nowhere) into the chorus. Pierce finds the sweet spot (as he so often does) with the extended mantra style outro.

Lay it down, lay it down, lay it down and let it bleed

Come on, come on, come on and lay it down, lay it down, lay it down and let it bleed

If anything, the song is faded too soon.

Crazy is currently my favourite song on the album. A psychedelic country tinged bluesy beauty. Upon first listen I simply tweeted the song with the words Oh J Spaceman.

It's just gorgeous, tugging on and playing a symphony on heart strings you didn't know you had.

Darling I'm sorry, I must make amends

For messing around with you

We've all heard the story, we know how it ends

Darling, I wish it weren't true

The Mainline Song/The Lockdown Song is the complete opposite to Crazy. Space is filled, things feel claustrophobic and chaotic before a riff and melody burst from nowhere. And then you're rushing, flowing directly into the heart of Spiritualized as they find the groove and ride it.

At just after 3-minutes Pierce comes in as the groove continues and new layers come in.

Hush, keep your voices down

Everyone is asleep uptown

And I wanted to know, if you wanted to go

To the city tonight

WOW! Just brilliant. This could be a live highlight.

The A Song (Laid In Your Arms) is beautifully grand, theatrical and bold. This is somehow a little bit like J Pierce fronting and conducting Queen! A crazy description? Judge for yourself. It all goes real Spirtualized in the end!

Before you know it, we reach the conclusion of the album, I'm Coming Home Again. Whereas the length of Spiritualized albums is a strength as there is always plenty of time to get lost in the music, Everything Was Beautiful is delivered in only 44 minutes. That's still an average of over 6 minutes per song!

Pierce stretches the song, introducing different characters and stories, again finding that sweet spot in terms of melody and groove, riding it into the sunset.

Spiritualized play SWG3 in Glasgow on Thursday 5th May.

Dua Lipa at The Hydro

Way back in 2020, when the country was locked down, Dua Lipa released Future Nostalgia on 27th March. Around that time our eldest daughter Zoe discovered Tik Tok and on it she discovered the song Don't Start Now. Before long, we all knew it!

And before long we all fell in love with Future Nostalgia, an album that would go on to be one of my albums of the year. Rammed full of hits; catchy, clever and euphoric pop. We tuned into Dua's Studio 2054 online concert and longed for the day when she would visit Glasgow.

Last night she did!

Oh what a night!

Pure pop with a clubby edge at times. We had outfit changes, dancers, roller blading dancers, lights, balloons, confetti cannons, a levitating stage, a catwalk, a pop star on top of her game backed by an excellent band and with (even after only 2 albums) an incredible selection of pop songs.

The set was largely lifted from Future Nostalgia, a truly stunning pop album in its own right, but every song could (and many were) be a single.

First, I must mention support act Griff who played a super 30-minute set and got the crowd singing along. Not only with her cover of Whitney Houston's classic I Wanna Dance With Somebody, but also with her own songs like One Night and Head On Fire. Tipped as one to watch at the 2021 Brits, I can only echo this and I'll be digging into her releases to date with as much eagerness as my kids. Only 21, Griff could explode over the next few years.

But last night was all about Dua Lipa. Her band, backing singers and dancers all took to the stage, introduced on the giant screens .... and then it was Dua in a pink PVC cat suit, strutting confidently on to the stage as her band jammed an extended intro to Physical.

And then things got physical! Dua and her dancers rarely stopped for the next 100-minutes. The crowd responded, cheering dance moves, breakdowns, singing choruses, singing full songs, waving mobiles, getting up on shoulders and generally going crazy. Many had been waiting almost 2-years for this performance.

Cool is one of my favourite Dua songs, cause it is super cool, the synths are just sublime. Break My Heart is ridiculously catchy while being euphoric and clubby with it. Posing the brilliant question

Am I falling in love with the one that could break my heart?

Be The One was Dua Lipa's second single way back in 2015 and it was possibly my favourite song of the night. Dua and her band broke the song down and played off the room against each other to sing the chorus.

Boys Will Be Boys was euphoric, lifted in pace slightly from the album version? It certainly seemed that way. A clubby mix with the dancers going crazy on the catwalk stage while Dua changed outfits was really cool, a great show.

The big songs were really kicking in now. One Kiss was incredible, lifting everyone on to their feet (although many in the seats were up already), Hallucinate was pure pop perfection and even Cold Heart, Dua's duet with Elton John sounded euphoric in the way it was played. My kids love it, but I'm not a fan when it comes on the radio. I loved it last night!

Dua was simply sensational. Oozing confidence as she strutted, danced, hair flicked and sang, seemingly effortlessly. Her outfits were pure pop, catsuits, dresses, clubby outfits ... a pop superstar.

The dancers left the stage and Dua sang the euphoric Levitating from .... a levitating stage - of course! Theatrical and pure pop. Closing with a double punch encore of Future Nostalgia and Don't Start Now, confetti rained down on the crowd who were now deliriously giddy on a pure pop high.

Wow! Dua Lipa put on an incredible show. This was pop, theatre, a dance club, a disco, a dream and pure pop escapism. At only 26, Dua Lipa has the pop world at her feet. I can't wait to see and hear what she does next.

Mondo 77

Trust Me #34

Looper is the electronic band formed and fronted by Stuart David, formerly of Belle & Sebastian. Their Twitter profile simply reads making lofi beats since 1998.

David co-formed Belle & Sebastian and was an integral member through the early glory years 1996-2000. The bands output (that I discuss briefly in this blog) was prolific and outstanding during this period. Four albums and four EP's.

Leaving to concentrate on his writing and Looper, David has been pretty prolific himself! Releasing 5 albums with Looper and also writing and publishing 5 novels. David's memoir In the All-Night Cafe, recounting the formation of Belle & Sebastian up until the launch show for Tigermilk is a MUST READ in my book. Funny, moving and beautifully vivid. Dreams, friendships, music and love. In fact, I'm going to reread it!

David's storytelling came out in his songs with Belle & Sebastian; A Century Of Elvis and A Space Boy Dream have a beautiful dreamy quality to them.

Anyway, the song Mondo 77 prompted me to write this blog. I can't remember how I discovered the song. It might have been through it featuring in Vanilla Sky. I just remember immediately thinking it was super cool.

And it is super cool

A dirty synth riff is quickly backed by beats and shouts of 'c'mon, c'mon, keep it going, yeah'. It's infectious in melody and energy. House piano is introduced over more yelps of encouragement, the synth melody is so playful. Beeps and sounds are introduced, bass is in and out, then horns come in.

At 2-minutes 40 seconds everything comes colliding together to sound even more joyful, energetic, fun and vital. This plays out to conclusion and at the end when David shouts 'keep it going, keep it going, yeah', you really do want them to keep it going.

I love it. Super cool lofi beats and dirty melodic synth - gorgeous.

Hope you fall for it hard if you have never heard it before. Or I hope you enjoy rediscovering the song if you haven't heard it in a while.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 12

Welcome to the latest of my monthly 60-minute mixes inspired by the kind of pre-club nights I would go to 'back in the day' at The Variety Bar or McChuills in Glasgow. I loved the music the DJ's played in there, both pubs had a real anything goes and everything flows philosophy.

As a result you'd get a real mix of music played through the night and I regularly preferred to stay in the pub until closing time (sometimes after) rather than go to a club.

This month's mix kicks off with a crazy tune by The Turtles and somehow makes it way to The KLF via Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, Marlena Shaw and many more. It's quite an eclectic mix with some extended electronic numbers to get lost in. And check the euphoric song by The Allergies in the middle! Oh and Stars by Mr Fingers!

I really enjoyed putting this mix together and hope you enjoy listening.

In My Life

Cover version of the month #75 - Johnny Cash covers The Beatles.

Rubber Soul was the album where everything started to really change for The Beatles.

Help! had hinted at what was coming. Songs with the depth of Yesterday and Lennon's gut wrenching title song highlighted that the band were ready (if not beginning) to step away from Beatlemania. Rubber Soul was that first stride, then they broke into a run with Revolver and a sprint with Sgt Peppers.

The influence of pot had well and truly kicked in and The Beatles had also begun to experiment with LSD. The band were spending more time in the studio, money was no object and they were beginning to push and break boundaries with production, different instruments and sounds.

It's sometimes hard to fathom that Rubber Soul was released only 2.5 years after debut album Please Please Me which (other than the previously released singles) was famously recorded in one day on 11th February 1963.

The Beatles had a 'leisurely' month to record Rubber Soul and were in such a rich vein of form that they could release AA sided single Day Tripper & We Can Work It Out on the same day.

No wonder people constantly look back at The Beatles career. It was astonishing on so many levels!

Anyway, the purpose of this blog is to look at Lennon's In My Life from Rubber Soul.

John & Paul by David Bailey in 1965

Lennon turned 25 in October 65, meaning he was only 24 when he wrote this truly brilliant song. The whole feel of In My Life benefits from George Martin playing piano that is made to sound like a harpsichord due to some production work with tape speeds. George Harrison's melodic and slow chiming guitar riff is instantly identifiable, McCartney's harmonies and oooohhhhh backing vocals are delightful, but the song is all about the lyrics.

In only 2-minutes 26 seconds Lennon goes deep; looking forward to his last day when he'll reflect, on places, lovers, friends and the special one. His Mum? Stuart Sutcliffe? Paul?

In My Life was definitely a Lennon original, but it became a true Lennon & McCartney co-write. Probably one of the last for a while! Lennon certainly acknowledged his friends help with harmonies and the middle eight, while Paul says that John wrote the lyrics and he wrote the music.

Either way, In My Life is a startlingly mature and reflective song and those qualities take on a whole new meaning when you hear Johnny Cash singing it in 2002 on his American IV - The Man Comes Around album. Cash would die the following year. The album was the last to be released in his lifetime.

The opening riff is slower and then oh my, Cash's rich, soulful and aged voice comes in. It's a stop you in your tracks moment. You're hooked, it's like Cash is talking directly to you. Really directly. It's f**king beautiful.

Slowing the song down adds an extra 30-seconds on to it and every single millisecond aches with love, hurt, reflection and regret. The instrumental is dreamy and melancholic, then Cash is back in, sounding incredible.

This is the second time Cash has featured in my cover version of the month series of blogs (his famed version of Nine Inch Nails Hurt was cover of the month #13 back in June 2016) and it probably won't be the last.

Get your headphones on, pour a cuppa, a beer or a nice glass of red wine and listen to this. Stunning.

There are places I'll remember

All my life, though some have changed

Some forever, not for better

Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments

With lovers and friends I still can recall

Some are dead and some are living

In my life, I've loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers

There is no-one compares with you

And these memories lose their meaning

When I think of love as something new

Though I know I'll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know I'll often stop and think about them

In my life, I love you more

Though I know I'll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know I'll often stop and think about them

In my life, I love you more

Teenage Fanclub at SWG3 Glasgow

Earlier this week Teenage Fanclub released a video for new song I Left A Light On. I needed it. I had the Monday blues after watching the news the previous night. The utterly horrific events taking place in Ukraine chilled my bones and my heart.

Escaping from reality into a 3.5 minutes of melancholic pop music was just what I needed it. I must have. I played it half a dozen times in a row. The warmth of Norman's voice, the harmonies with Euros, the guitars, the piano at the centre of the song, the strings ... beautiful. Quite Lennon-esque.

You know I left a light on

I left it on for you

And I think I needed a night out too.

Then on Tuesday I finished work at 11am as I suddenly felt shattered and spent the rest of the day in bed. I was testing negative but was convinced COVID was in the pipeline. The sleep must have worked, as I woke up feeling fresh on Wednesday morning and returned a couple of negative LTF's through the day. I was going to the gig after all.

All my life I felt so uptight

No it's all alright

While the gig is fresh in my mind I have to mention a few highlights. In fact, rather than run through the gig song by song, I'm just going to go with 10 highlights off the top off my head.

I'll start with Raymond's My Uptight Life. Oooofffftt the closing refrain brought tears to my eyes as the band faded out to leave just Raymond and Norman singing over Raymond's guitar. And then the crowd came in to sing with them a few times. It was a really beautiful moment.

Another highlight? Norman leading the band through I'm In Love in record time. Every time I see the band play this song they seem to be on a mission to take a second or two off the length, tearing through it and making it all the more electrifying.

More?

OK well the whole gig made me smile and escape reality for a while. And any worries of the band being rusty after a number of months off were banished very early on as the band ripped through Warm Embrace and jammed gloriously on Home.

And I must mention the young teenager and his Dad to my left, centre stage, just a couple of rows from the front. The young guy had a Pretty Green jacket that he took off to display a Fred Perry top. They were having a great time together and it really made me smile to see a true teenager in the Teenage Fanclub Fanclub!

The run of About You, Start Again and Alcoholiday was incredible, warm guitar sounds washed over the audience

Norman xylophone was greeted like a long lost friend for Raymond's beautiful Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From. A truly beautiful song. As is Only With You.

Back In The Day is a real favourite from Endless Arcade and is it just me or does the closing section of The Concept get better every time I hear it?

John McCusker and Stu Kidd joined the band onstage for the beautiful new ballad I Left A Light On, although their sound could have been turned up a notch or two. It's a promising sign that the band are writing, recording and releasing new music. A new album next year?

There was sadly no room for Raymond's Can't Feel My Soul due to a strict curfew but Everything Flows was played with zip, zest and warm smile on stage and off.

Special shout out to Stephen Black who played bass in place of Dave due to re-re-rescheduling conflicts. He was super solid. As for the rest of the band, Raymond seemed to be really enjoying himself, Norman was smiling throughout, Euros has brought so much to the band and Francis was in top form, particularly on Warm Embrace and I'm In Love as he drove the band on at pace.

A great night from a band in brilliant form.

Losing My Edge

Trust Me #33

20-years ago a band called LCD Soundsystem burst on to the scene with their debut single Losing My Edge, released on leader James Murphy's label DFA Records.

Last month Murphy announced a series of 20th anniversary residencies and parties for his band, including a run of nights at the Brixton Academy in London.

So for this month's Trust Me blog I thought i would revisit that astonishing single. It really was a breath of fresh air. I caught them live at The Barrowland back in 2004 (I think) supporting Too Many DJ's and the way they all huddled around a bank of synths and created a party atmosphere blew me away. The following year my wife (then girlfriend) and I went to Benicassim and they came on stage at 2 in the morning and whipped up a frenzy. I've caught them a couple of times at the Barrowland since then. It's a bit of a home from home for them. I was hoping (still am) that they might sneak in a wee Glasgow residency for their 20th anniversary ...

But back to Losing My Edge.

Everything about this song is cool, clever and funny. Murphy's spoken word, the vast variety of synth sounds, the beats and the way it somehow all hangs together and sounds brilliant.

Over 8-minutes Murphy tells a tale of paranoia - is he losing his edge?

Murphy highlights what his paranoia is based on - hip young kids from France, London, Tokyo, Berlin and Brooklyn coming through in the music scene, but he then balances that by repeatedly coming back to reflect how hip he was/is.

I was there in 1968

I was there at the first Can show in Cologne

Is Murphy losing his edge? How can he be? He was there at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City, working on the organ sounds. He was the first guy to play Daft Punk to the rock kids at CBGB's and everyone thought he was crazy.

The squelchy synth bass is slightly distorted, sounding super cool as Murphy yells I was there!

Murphy goes on, trying to convince himself as well as those listening. He's never been wrong, he heard everything first, he was in the DJ booth at Paradise with Larry Levan.

Yet then there are better-looking people with better ideas and more talent. Paranoia that we all face as we get older!

Murphy reflects on these youngsters - they have incredible compilations, all the great Beach Boys songs and Modern Lovers tracks. Rare vinyl on import or white label.

As the song develops, through Murphy's inspired rant, the music builds in tandem, that squelchy distorted bass continues though, underpinning everything.

I heard that you and your band have sold your guitars and bought turntables

I hear that you and your band have sold your turntables and bought guitars

Murphy asks, have you seen my records? Then listing a number of bands and artists ending with The Sonics, The Sonics, The Sonics, The Sonics before the song veers off into a glorious hook you don't know what you really want that is repeated time and time again.
