Never Ending Mixtape part 92

Hola, Bonjour, hey, hi, hello

Welcome to the latest additions to my Never Ending Mixtape, my Spotify playlist that I add to on a regular basis and do a round up monthly blog.

The playlist has jumped from 3,896 songs to 3,934 with Attack Of The Glam Soul Cheerleaders by Ette. AKA my sister Carla J Easton. I enjoyed revisiting her Homemade Lemonade album recently. Recorded with friend Joe Kane in a garage lock up, the album has a real freshness to it.

So we are fast approaching 4,000 songs on a playlist/mixtape. To think of the hours I used to spend making C90 tapes for family and friends. With this playlist, if I'm listening to something I like, I just add it on. No thought goes into the song order. 

As a result, you'll find a super eclectic playlist with all kinds of music. I like to just stick it on shuffle and see where it takes me. 

As always, I hope you discover an incredible song you've never heard before, or that you rediscover an old favourite that you haven't listened to in ages.

Like A Ship (Without A Sail) by Pastor TL Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir

I discovered this wonderful gospel soul song last year after leaving a Spotify playlist playing on. When that happens, algorithms kick in and play recommended songs based on your taste. I totally get the criticism that Spotify receives, but (in a sign of age) this is largely how I discover music these days!

Like A Ship (Without A Sail) by Pastor TL Barrett and the Youth for Christ Choir came on and it absolutely blew me away. I played it 3 times in a row and made a mental note to feature it in my Trust Me series.

Actually, I did more than that. I opened a draft blog, stuck the title in and left it. I didn't want to forget about this gem! 

And now I have finally got round to writing about it!

Thomas Lee Barrett is a preacher in Chicago and during the 1970's he recorded a number of gospel albums. Barrett was extremely fortunate that this congregation included top drawer musicians like Richard Evans (of Rotary Connection), Phil Upchurch, Charles Pittman and Philip Bailey (of Earth Wind and Fire). Many played on his records.

Barrett released the album Like A Ship (Wihtout A Sail) in 1971. I really do recommend checking it out. 

The title song is astonishing. The piano riff, the bass, the beats and heavy percussion create a real cool funk groove from the off. Then the choir kicks in, their voices soar heavenly. Pastor TL Barrett sings in between them, with a deep, rich and soulful voice.

The contrast in the call and response between Barrett and his choir is what makes this song and recording so memorable. The feel and the mood created by the choir really is spine tingling

The little shift in gear towards the choir singing on their own at 2-minutes 45 seconds creates goosebumps every time I hear it. Wow! And then it slows and the groove kicks back in as the call and response vocals return.

Sibling lockdown mixtapes volume 5

Welcome to the volume 6 of the siblings 10-song mixtape lockdown challenge.

This week I included some songs I recently discovered via a Le Beat Bespoke live DJ session, including a stormer by Shocking Blue that I've been playing a lot. I tried to go for a mixtape that would go down well in McChuills, one of my favourite bars in Glasgow. I long to go back in there for a night out and to see old Nick behind the bar or playing some tunes.

My brother really mixes it up and the opening double of Beyonce going into the Manics works surprisingly well. I loved Sugar's Copper Blue album, so it was great to see them featured. Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Elastic sit with Pete Frampton and Elvis. And it works!

This is my sisters strongest playlist yet, or at least it is my favourite. The opening x-rated soul jam is outrageous, The Ikettes song is my song of the week, the Doris Troy and Cookies versions of songs I know are stunning and the closing northern soul romp of I Can Feel Your Love is a blast.

Sibling lockdown mixtapes volume 4

It's been over a month since I caught up with my brother and sister in person. However we have been communicating by phone/video most days and our weekly 10-song mixtape challenge has been a real positive thing to look forward to curating and receiving every week.

I am really enjoying the challenge of making a 10-song mixtape/playlist every week for my brother and sister and I am loving seeing what they create for me.

This week my playlist is focused on guitar pop with a lot of focus on chiming guitars. Scotland is well represented, as is Australia, the West Coast of America and Birmingham! I love all of these songs and I hope you enjoy checking them out.

My brother mixes it up again. There are some heavy riffs from Jack White and Supergrass, a cool cover I hadn't heard before, pop perfection from Todd Rundgren and a couple of other cracking cover versions including Ezra Furman taking on LCD Soundsystem.

The Secession and Charli XCX songs on my sisters mixtape blew me away. And I have a not so guilty pleasure in loving that Annie Lennox song. How powerful is The Fuzzy Bunnies version of The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore?! And I love the Basia Bulat song.
