GIMIX- a mixtape by The Avalanches

25-years ago The Avalanches blew my mind with their Since I Left You single and album of the same name. Friends and I went to see them at The Arches. Memories are vague. After all, we ended up in Alaska on Bath Lane until closing. 

I stumbled into work at 11am the following day, with the excuse that I had broken my glasses at a gig and had to get them repaired that morning. My boss just smiled. He knew I'd had a night on it. Thankfully I played fives with him and we had a good relationship. Everything was cool!

I'd woken up that morning to discover I'd bought a mixtape at the merch desk. As I put it on, when I got back from work, memories came back of The Avalanches mixing in Madonna's Holiday, Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On and Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone early in their set. After that ... I seem to remember a lot of jumping and bouncing on stage and in the crowd. There were a lot of people in The Avalanches live set up. Later that year I went down to see two of them DJ at Sankeys Soap in Manchester. At one point they dropped in Queen's I Want To Break Free. Half the crowd went with it, while the other half paused for a moment to ask ... are they really playing ....?

The mixtape I had bought was entitled GIMIX, essentially a bootleg/alternate universe version of Since I Left You. The Avalanches weren't thinking about a commercial international release for the mix/album they were working on, they weren't documenting the samples (over 3,500) they were using, they were simply having fun and attempting to make the best and coolest music they possibly could. 

So on GIMIX, a promo release in 2000, The Avalanches weren't limited by the sample clearances that eventually stripped back the commercial album. Even they don't have a record of everything they used.

GIMIX was way ahead of its time. A couple of years ahead of As Heard On Radio Soulwax Pt II by Too Many DJ's that received a commercial release - albeit like an "official bootleg".

GIMIX begins with Since I Left You, complete with some extra dialogue that didn't make/wasn't cleared for the album. We then head off on the trip of a lifetime as The Avalanches take listeners on a ride through 80's pop, iconic 60's tracks, classic hip hop, The Smiths, Hendrix ... underground house and overground electronic dance by Detroit Grand Pubahs and Fatboy Slim, merging into Hall & Oattes, a dash of Sgt. Peppers - the guitar and then the song speeded up, Deee-lite ...

Flowing as one continuous, chaotic work of art, this mix is utterly magical. Vinyl crackles just add to the whole vibe and magic. The Avalanches skill to not only find and select samples to create new music and mix them all together is spell binding.

We veer back to Holiday by Madonna and some more music by The Avalanches, or samples that became the bedrock of songs on the album. A Different Feeling kicks in with even more euphoria than when it appears on the album. Michael Jackson's Billie Jean cuts like a knife, fleeting, then the groove comes back in. It hits the spot.

Closing with their own gloriously trippy Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life into a fading Holiday by Madonna spliced with Dreams by Fleetwood Mac, you don't want it to end. GIMIX is 45-minutes of genius.

Welcome to my first Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix of 2023. If you're new to this series, it's basically me compiling a 60(ish) minute mix/playlist that I would love to hear/play in one of my favourite pubs in Glasgow - McChuills. 

McChuills is an incredible music pub. It lives and breathes it. DJ's, bands, posters, artwork, nights, days ... Located on High Street, just on the edge of the Merchant City, it's just nicely out of the way of anything else, though still very central.

This months mix definitely has a McChuills vibe of northern soul, mod and just a dash of funk. It's got old faves from previous mixes like Keep On Keepin' On and I Believe In Miracles, but also plenty of recent discoveries such as the fantabulous version of Sympathy For The Devil by Sandie Shaw. Look out for that featuring in my Cover of the Month series in the near future!

Welcome to my last 60-minute mix of 2022. I've gone a little over, I was really enjoying putting this one together and didn't want to stop. This is one that could have gone on and the last song maybe hints at the direction I could have gone down.

Hammond grooves, funky beats, wah wah guitars, super cool bass, euphoric horns ... I'm really pleased with this one. I was intending for it to be pretty chilled after a rather manic year, but it's still got a groove.

This months 60(ish) minute mix goes all in. My aim from this mix is to make people smile or dance. Ideally both! The weather has turned, the cost of living crisis has gripped the country, the Tories still don't give a flying f**k and today it has been absolutely chucking it down.

So here are some tunes to make you feel all warm inside.

We kick off with the sublime orchestration of The Love Unlimited Orchestra and then we're straight into the tune that The Chemical Brothers would regularly open DJ sets with. Wait until the beats and strings kick in at 2  minutes! 

Going Back To My Roots is one of my all-time favourites but I usually play the Ritchie Havens version. Then it's a couple of stone cold soul stompers, the wonder of Stevie, extended mixes and Dimitri re-edits of some all time favourites, followed by Candi Staton & Whitney Houston classics to finish

Welcome to my 17th 60-minute mix where I try and capture the vibe from pre-club nights I used to attend in my younger days at the likes of The Variety Bar & McChuills in Glasgow.

This mix might have a late afternoon/early evening in McChuills kind of vibe. Old Nick would be behind the bar pulling all kinds of cd's out and just going with the flow.

Kicking off with a 12 minute live groove from Donny Hathaway and his band, you are in for a treat with that song alone, never mind the full mix! Hathaway announces he is going to break the song/groove down into 4-movements, allowing each of his band to a chance to shine, a chance for them all to stretch out.

It's a stunner. I love the way piano really takes things a little higher, a little further at around the 3-minute mark and then brings it all back .... then Donny introduces 'the second movement y'all' allowing his guitarist to go for it. Wait for the bass groove though!!!! 'That sounds pretty good y'all!'

I remember getting this album for a fiver from FOPP many years ago, it's been great to revisit it.

Betty Davis' Hangin' Out features, possibly for the 3rd time in one of these mixes. I keep coming back to this song. It's super cool and funky with a catchy chorus.

Elsewhere, most of these songs are new discoveries over the last month or so. God I love music and having the time to explore different artists and sounds.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 13

Welcome to the latest of my monthly 60-minute mixes inspired by the kind of pre-club nights I would go to 'back in the day' at The Variety Bar or McChuills in Glasgow. I loved the music the DJ's played in there, both pubs had a real anything goes and everything flows philosophy. 

As a result you'd get a real mix of music played through the night and I regularly preferred to stay in the pub until closing time (sometimes after) rather than go to a club.

So, my 13th mix - lucky for some and lucky for you! This is definitely one of my favourites. I love the way it flows. Opening with a (relative) newbie by David Holmes and going into a brilliant funky electro pop song by Lou Hayter who used to be in New Young Pony Club. Really love this song and her album that she released last year.

There are some big hitting club acts involved - Simian Mobile Disco, Todd Terje and Justice! No messing! Also the brilliant track by Queen Of Japan that Too Many DJ's used to great effect circa 20-years ago.

How cool is the DFA remix of Gorillaz DARE? WOW! It goes on and on, I would be in heaven if I heard this in a club or at a pre-club night!

Then Swoon ... aptly named. Before closing with an outrageous song by The Juan Mclean.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ mix 11 - Andrew Weatherall

Andrew Weatherall seemed to sprinkle magic on absolutely everything he touched. Coming to my attention through Primal Scream's seminal 1991 album Screamadelica, Weatherall's taste was cool and unique. If he loved something, if he thought it was interesting - then he was all in.

This resulted in him working with an incredible range of bands and artists through his career. From bands at their peak, to new bands breaking through. Old friends and new friends.

His talent and taste was well supported by labels like Heavenly Recordings, recognised by peers and worshipped by devoted fans.

In short, Weatherall was special. A visionary. He heard things in songs that us mere mortals couldn't. Or at least we couldn't until he got his hands on them and remixed them. 

On the second anniversary of his death, I found myself checking Twitter for tributes and fans posting their favourite Weatherall moments. Leading to me going down a delightful Andrew Weatherall rabbit hole for a few hours and clicking on some remixes that I hadn't heard before. As well as old favourites.

So for my regular Anything Goes & Everything Flows 60-minute mixes I've compiled one of Weatherall mixes. Only it's gone way beyond 60-minutes. That's probably apt as Andrew Weatherall was a guy who didn't believe in boundaries.

As mentioned in previous blogs. I started the 60-minute mixes based on favourite pubs in Glasgow like The Variety Bar and McChuills. I think this would go down a storm on a Friday/Saturday night in either.

I hadn't heard a number of these songs/remixes before. I particularly love the Silver Apples song, while both The Asphodells songs are fantastic and I'm exploring them a little more. Elsewhere long-time favourite bands of mine are well represented.

Welcome to the 10th in my series of 60-minute DJ mixes where I try and play tunes that I think would do down well in 2 of my favourite bars in Glasgow - McChuills and The Variety Bar. I used to visit these bars regularly in my younger years and the music the DJ's played tended to keep me in the bar all night long. Often giving up the chance to go on to a club just to stay there.

This month, I've gone for a more guitar focused mix than usual. Tunes like Crosstown Traffic can transform the atmosphere and vibe of a night immediately thanks to that incredible vibrant and urgent intro. The pace doesn't let up as Hendrix plays with sexual innuendo as he and his band rip through the song.

Louie Louie by The Kingsmen is a song I have heard many, many times in McChuills. It must be one of the coolest songs of all time. Then again, so must Roadrunner by The Modern Lovers.

Lennon's Instant Karma is euphoric and raw, Primal Scream sit next to their beloved Stones, the way Roger Daltrey sings why don't you all f-f-f-fade away still excites and thrills in 2022 and there is power pop perfection from Elvis Costello and also Buzzcocks.

This months 1-hour DJ mix, inspired by the kind of tunes that would be played in McChuills or The Variety Bar back in the early 00's (where the motto was anything goes and everything flows) is another eclectic mix with a kind of early evening moving towards the bar getting busier with pre-clubbers kinda vibe

I used to love going into McChuills in particular at that time. Sitting at the bar with a beer, enjoying the tunes and a chat with the bar staff and friends. Then just getting more and more in the mood for a dance and a big night out as the evening wore on and the tunes changed.

So we start with The Cure, New Order and The The - cool indie tunes with playful melodies and grooves, moving to the simply sublime Sister Sledge with the gorgeous Thinking Of You. Moving into the soulful shuffle and crystal clear vocals of Sharon Jones, we then add a dash of funk with The Quantic Soul Orchestra, before The Spinners with It's A Shame, the kind of song you can sing the chorus after one listen - what a tune!

Getting busy in the bar, it's time to ramp things up a little with the stone cold gem of Bowie's Sound & Vision is dropped. Always likely to get those in the know smiling and nodding in appreciation - maybe even a little dance.

And if you want to make people feel good on a Friday/Saturday night then a little Prince with I Wanna Be Your Lover can go a long way! Greg Wilson's mix of Confidence Man starts a little slow for 20 seconds and then the bass and beats kick in - what a tune! The last 2-minutes are particularly euphoric!

If Queen of Japan's I Was Made For Loving You is good enough for Too Many DJ's then it is good enough for me - edgy sexual pop perfection. Felix Da Housecat works with the magical Nina Simone's Sinnerman and then we have Hot Chip to move further into the night.

This months 1-hour (62-minute) DJ mix, inspired by the kind of tunes that would be played in McChuills or The Variety Bar back in the early 00's (where the motto was anything goes and everything flows) is a real mix of electronica, soul and northern soul, hip hop and pop. 

Having been in McChuills quite a few times over the last couple of months. I can gladly report that the focus on music is still very much anything goes and everything flows. It's an incredible place.

I'm pretty pleased with this months mix. It's quite eclectic and hopefully contains a couple of jaw dropping tracks. The kind that, if you hadn't heard them before, would cause people to come up to the DJ and ask 'What/Who is that?!' 

Kicking off with a beautiful sunshine soul funk jam by Darondo, reworked by Dave Allison - all wooooohs, strings, grooves and harmonies ... utterly sublime. If I heard this in a bar I would be asking the DJ or bar staff the song title.

Basement Jaxx still sound fresh and fun. Especially when mixed and mashed with The Clash! Daft Punk's Da Funk will stop you in your tracks with its power and intensity, Todd Terje is super playful, Peggy Lee's take on Otis Redding's classic is euphoric, Barbara Ralph is super cool, Andy Smith highlights what he can do in 7-minutes (never mind 60).

De La Soul are utterly magical with Saturdays, Neneh Cherry's Buffalo Stance still excites, Modjo and Phoenix provide euphoric vocal electro pop, Blue Boy play with a classic and then we have pure pop fun with House Arrest by Crush.

Welcome to another bumper addition of songs to my Never Ending Mixtape playlist on Spotify. I've actually added a lot more songs, so I might need to write a bonus blog to catch up in November.

What a mix! From David Crosby demos to brand new artists like Drug Store Romeos who have released one of my favourite albums this year. In between we have an incredible brass/gospel/street cover version of the Joy Division classic Love Will Tear Us Apart, a sublime Dimitri From Paris mix of Sister Sledge, and a song called Darth Vader Helmet by Sneeze!

Ummm there is a lot more including a couple of songs from San Francisco's The Umbrellas who have also released a brilliant album this year. There are old favourites from PJ Harvey, a brilliant Nirvana b-side, Evan Dando and then a couple from Saint Etienne's recent album.

This months 60-minute mix, inspired by the kind of tunes that would be played in McChuills or The Variety Bar back in the early 00's (where the motto seemed to be anything goes and everything flows) is very electronic focused, with more than a passing nod to euphoric pop. 

It might be my favourite 60-minute mix to date that I've done. It certainly is at present! If you're my age then you'll remember when Madonna came back from 5/6 years of blandness with the epic Ray of Light. It was a sensational return to form, instantly reminding everyone she was the Queen of Pop.
