Never Ending Mixtape part 110

Welcome to part 110 of my Never Ending Mixtape where the latest additions take us from 4,934 songs to 5,012 with the addition of Hit & Run Lover by Tommie Young.

Over 5,000 songs! The teenage me who spent hours and hours creating C90 mixtapes for friends and for my own pleasure would never have dreamed you could create something like this - where you just add songs whenever, in no particular order!

As always, I hope you find something wonderful that you've never heard before, or that you rediscover an old favourite song. I personally play my Never Ending Mixtape on shuffle, but play from the start, the middle, or scroll down (could take a while!) to the latest additions.

Thanks if you are one of the 383 who follow the playlist, or if you check in on it (and my blog) from time to time. And welcome if you have just discovered both.

Never Ending Mixtape part 77

Welcome to part 77 of my Never Ending Mixtape.

On 6th September the Mixtape was up to 2,845 songs. I missed an update in October, so it's now up to over 3,000! I'm not going to list all of the songs that have been added. I'll try and revert back to doing that next month.

What I can tell you is that there are additions by; Sebadoh (pictured above), Shack, The Beta Band, Buffalo Springfield (pictured below), The Jam, Sweet Baboo, The Isley Brothers, The Ohio Players, Erma Franklin, Marva Whitney, The Beths, The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, Tim Burgess, Yo La Lengo, Teenage Fanclub, Angel Olsen (pictured above), Taylor Swift, Mark Lanegan (check his autobiography!), Charlotte Cornfield, The Reds Pinks & Purples, Poster Paints, Hanging Stars and Bob Dylan!

Then we come bang up to date with songs from the new Taylor Swift album with Question? and my personal favourite Karma sandwiched between Mogwai and The Only Ones. Where else would you get that?

There are a few songs from the recent Revolver boxset including The Beatles playing Rain at actual speed! It's incredible.

Stereolab (pictured below), Elastica, Aphex Twin, The Magnetic Fields, Peter Gordon & the Love of Life Orchestra and Diana Ross bring the Never Ending Mixtape up to 3,013 songs!

Play from the start, the middle, click shuffle, or scroll down towards the end to find some of the songs I've been enjoying over the last couple of months.

As always, I hope you rediscover something you love, or that you discover something you've never heard before that you fall for instantly.

ENJOY.

Sibling lockdown mixtapes volume 3

Hope Sandoval and Jim Reid

I am really enjoying the challenge of making a 10-song mixtape/playlist every week for my brother and sister and I am loving seeing what they create for me.

This week my playlist is focused on guitar pop with a lot of focus on chiming guitars. Scotland is well represented, as is Australia, the West Coast of America and Birmingham! I love all of these songs and I hope you enjoy checking them out.

My brother mixes it up again. There are some heavy riffs from Jack White and Supergrass, a cool cover I hadn't heard before, pop perfection from Todd Rundgren and a couple of other cracking cover versions including Ezra Furman taking on LCD Soundsystem.

The Secession and Charli XCX songs on my sisters mixtape blew me away. And I have a not so guilty pleasure in loving that Annie Lennox song. How powerful is The Fuzzy Bunnies version of The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore?! And I love the Basia Bulat song.

Sibling lockdown mixtapes volume 1

I wish I had kept all my old mixtapes
This is one of the few I have remaining

A few weeks ago, my brother Ross suggested to our sister Carla and I that the three of us should make weekly 10-song mixtapes to help give us a musical focus in these unprecedented times. The aim is to send them to each other every Monday morning on our WhatsApp chat.

Mixtapes have a rich history in our family. I used to post mixtapes with written commentary on each song to my brother when he moved to Edinburgh to study at uni. Years later I would do the same when our younger sister went to Art School. Although by then it was cd's!

Both would send me mixtapes or cd's back. As things gradually went digital (although we all still buy vinyl) and as we got a little older, we gradually grew out of making mixtapes.

Reflecting on my younger siblings moving out the family home to study, I guess making mixtapes for them was my way of showing them I was thinking about them. As the older brother, both would regularly raid my CD and record collection to discover new music. Mixtapes were my way of communicating about music I was discovering and owned.

Family catch up a year ago
Now it's WhatsApp video calls

Now we can't see each other, mixtapes/playlists have come back to help us communicate.

There is an art to making a mixtape. I blog regularly about my Never Ending Mixtape, but I just throw songs on there. There is an art to a 10-song mixtape There are different arts.

So I'm going to share our weekly mixtapes. Here is week 1. All are very different!

I start with a short instrumental, lead into some euphoric electro/house, have some pure pop, a cool cover, a superb re-edit, some northern soul, some Charlatans and a nice hopeful message.

Ross mainly goes 80's! I love the Kiki Dee, R. Dean Taylor and INXS songs in particular. And what an epic closer!

Carla mixes it up. I particularly enjoyed the Peals song that I hadn't heard before, the classic Motown by Carolyn Crawford and the Whyte Horses closer. One of my sisters favourite bands.

Dig in - I hope you enjoy.

Never Ending Mixtape Part 40

Welcome to the latest addition to the Everything Flows Never Ending Mixtape. We begin with a stomper by Shirley and the Shirelles, before a few from the time they were simply known as The Shirelles. We then have punk pop from Buzzcocks and The Undertones, a rare one from Belle and Sebastian, Boards of Canada, one of my favourites from Teenage Fanclub and a cover version of it by Mark Morriss, Reed, Bowie, The Lemonheads and the late Daniel Johnstone feature alongside gems from Edwyn Collins, New Order, Marlena Shaw and The Exciters. Never Ending Mixtape Part 36

Pop genius Brian Wilson

And so my Never Ending Mixtape passes the 1,000 song mark. And, even if I do say so myself, it does so in style with some stupendous tunes.

There are tunes to dance to, get lost in, swoon and melt over, sing to, play air guitar to and fall in love with. Some of these tunes have lived with me for years or decades, others are tunes I have just discovered.

The Nearest Faraway Place is an instrumental by The Beach Boys that will let you drift off into a daydream, Another Boy Like Mine (demo) will hit you hard and you'll fall, Iko Iko is like a playground song full of simplistic joy and Tommy and the Shondells are my new favourite 60's band with Crimson and Clover shooting high into my favourite songs ever list. Never Ending Mixtape Part 34

Welcome to the latest additions to my Never Ending Mixtape playlist on Spotify. The mixtape approaches 1,000 songs with additions from favourite bands, brand new bands, recent releases, classics and new discoveries.

Last month I discovered Amazing Grace, the live album Aretha Franklin recorded at a church in LA over 2 nights back in 1972 backed by a gospel choir. It is astonishing. There are a few songs included in the recent additions and I look forward to checking out the documentary that will be released in cinemas next month. Check the trailer below and the songs on the playlist.

Elsewhere we have a couple of songs from BMX Bandits more recent catalogue, the raw and soulful Razorblades and Honey and the tug on your heart strings The Unforgiven, both are real favourites of mine with 2 of my favourite vocals from Duglas T Stewart. With Spring in the air (at the time of writing) we have the joyful Check My Heart by The Pastels and also Automatically Yours from their classic Up For A Bit With The Pastels album that I might write a future blog on.

There is new music from Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever who play Saint Lukes in Glasgow this July, also from Lambchop and from a local band Pocket Knife who I really like. They play Mono on Saturday April 27th and it is FREE entry. More new local music from a band called The Plastic Youth who sound very promising.

As my mixtape (spotify playlist) heads towards 700 songs I find myself listening to it more and more. I travel quite regularly with work, so this is a perfect companion, whether I stick it on shuffle or scroll to the end for latest additions or to a certain section. I hope those of you that check it out enjoy it as well.

This month's update to the playlist has loads of indie guitar gems; The Pastels make another appearance (and it won't be the last), Frank Black is in with a solo number, Sonic Youth show us how it is done, Smudge have 4 numbers that highlight what a brilliant and unique songwriter Tom Morgan is and the fuzzy guitar pop of The Amps is a noisy delight.

R.E.M have a couple of gorgeous songs, James feature with the classic Sit Down recorded live at the G-Mex and early effort Johnny Yen. I remember the G-Mex concert came out on VHS in the summer I broke my leg as a teenager and I sat and watched it endlessly, marvelling at the way the band and audience seemed as one and the incredible response to Sit Down which is brilliantly capture on the film and also on the 12-inch vinyl I own.

If you check out one song, then check out Oh Happy Day by The Edwin Hawkins Singers, a live gospel recording that just oozes with feeling and soul.

Arcade Fire, Kathryn Joseph, The Clean, Felt and Velvet Crush are also included. Dig in.
