Welcome to part 70 of my Never Ending Mixtape.

Firstly, it's always important to buy music/merch/tickets for bands & artists that you love. I think it's important to state this on the back of Spotify announcing a sponsorship deal with Barcelona to the sum of $310 million. Money that could easily have gone into better streaming deals for artists using their platform.

I struggle with this deal on 2 levels. Firstly, Spotify really don't need to advertise. Secondly, it wasn't so long ago that Barcelona proudly didn't sport a shirt sponsor and the thought of selling the naming rights to Camp Nou wouldn't have crossed their minds. It sadly highlights what a money driven world top level football has become.

I own many of the songs listed below. I've also just discovered many of them. I have Spotify to thank for that. It bugs me that I really like the platform, but hate the way they are spending money.

Hopefully, they will realise that their strategy could drive artists and music fans away from their platform if they don't improve.

So just to re-iterate. Streaming is fine, but please support the artists you particularly love. It's not easy for them.

Never Ending Mixtape part 66

 I'm still catching up with all the songs I have recently added to my Never Ending Mixtape on Spotify.

Greg Gilbert of The Delays recently died after a very brave fight against cancer. Some people don't like using the word 'fight' when talking about cancer. But as someone who has worked for cancer support and terminal care charity, it is a word I have heard a lot. Greg tweeted about his illness, health and treatment regularly. He was a very talented young man, light shone from him and on him and very sadly he leaves a young family behind. I have fond memories of catching his band The Delays at King Tuts many moons ago. Rest In Peace.

Elsewhere Primal Scream feature heavily following the release of their 12-inch singles boxset and Demodelica album. Paul Heaton is in with The Housemartins and Beautiful South after I kicked myself for not going to his gig and seeing loads of great tweets about it.

There is a great Simon & Garfunkel documentary on the iPlayer, so that prompted me to add a couple of songs, then we have some cool soul from Curtis Mayfield, The Meters and modern day soul from Gabriels. A new song from Phoebe Bridgers, Young Fathers at their best and a couple of vintage songs by The Pastels.

This month sees the additions of a couple of gems from the latest Teenage Fanclub album, as well as a stunning track Norman sings on with his old friend Sean Dickson (AKA HiFi Sean). The Golden Smog song is beautiful, I intend to dig into their back catalogue.

Elsewhere J Mascis features, there are some gems from Gruff Rhys and I'm also enjoying his latest solo album, I'm sure there will be a few songs from that in my next update.

Never Ending Mixtape part 59

Welcome to the latest additions to my Never Ending Mixtape on Spotify.

I recently read the excellent Barbed Wire Kisses by Zoe Howe on the Mary Chain and as a result a healthy dose of The Jesus and Mary Chain songs added to the playlist, as well as their Sister Vanilla project with their sister Linda.

The BBC iPlayer is currently showing an incredible documentary on Shane MacGowan. The archive footage of a young teenage MacGowan discovering himself in London as punk is breaking is sensational, he was there at early gigs by The Pistols and The Clash, all of a sudden he discovers himself and an identity. The live footage from Pogues shows is spine tingling and breath taking, mild chaos on stage and on the floor, MacGowan the conductor. I've never really dug deep into The Pogues catalogue, but I've enjoyed checking them out. Sadly, some of the interview footage with MacGowan is pretty harrowing, always with a beer or wine close to hand, looking at least 20-years older than he is. 

Elsewhere we have a new track from UNKLE and I intend to blog on their latest album soon. Two gems from The Charlatans Between 10th & 11th feature, including the superbly titled Chewing Gum Weekend.
