Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 29

Welcome to my 29th 60(ish) minute mix of songs that I can imagine playing in pubs like McChuills or The Variety Bar in Glasgow. They very much have an Anything Goes and Everything Flows policy and that's what I try and do with my playlists or when I occasionally venture out to DJ.

For this mix, I combined 2 playlists that I was working on. Both were getting somewhere, but not really going where I wanted them. So, in the same way Lennon and McCartney spliced a couple of songs together for A Day In The Life, I've spliced together 2 mixes.

The first section is very soul influenced, kicking off with an old gem but then going modern with Edinburgh's Joseph Malik, the incredible Michael Kiwanuka, Gabriels mixed by Greg Wilson, SAULT and a sensational cover by Niki & The Dove.

Moloko's smash hit The Time Is Now keeps the soulful flavour, but hints at a change in pace. Lou Hayter's sublime Time Out Of Mind eases things forward before we delve into all kinds of electronic goodness with the legendary Mr.Fingers, Underworld and The Chemical Brothers. Felix Da Housecat and Orbital with Mike Garry.

Anything Goes and Everything Flows DJ Mix 28

Welcome to my 28th 60(ish) minute mix. This one was inspired by reading Sly Stone's autobiography and his mention of the Ray Charles song Let's Go Get Stoned. That led me on to Stoned Soul Picnic and things developed from there.

Sly and his band feature 3 times. Firstly with the super stoned groove of Everybody Is A Star, then the fabulous Everyday People. It's incredible that this song is only 2-minutes 19 seconds long! The mix closes with a 12-minute Sly & The Family Stone medley which I'd never heard before. Wow!

Stone's style, his arrangements and his originality really set him and his band apart. They were one of a kind. I'd highly recommend his book.

Anything Goes and Everything Flows DJ Mix 27

Hey

It's been a couple of months since my last 60-minute mix.

I've gone for something a little different this time; starting and ending the mix with a couple of cool, dreamy, acoustic yet psychedelic songs. In between there is a riot of 60's beat group and psychedelia and somehow Cornershop find their way in too!

I've decided to title this mix Embryonic Journey after the sublime opening song by Jefferson Airplane, as everything that follows really stemmed from this blissful instrumental. I first heard it on the programme The Wonder Years when I was a kid. I find it so peaceful - very welcome given the chaotic world that we are living in.

Anything Goes and Everything Flows DJ Mix 26

Hello and welcome to my latest 60-ish minute mix where I create a playlist of songs that I'd love to hear in a pub like McChuills or The Variety Bar in Glasgow. I used to frequent these pubs 'back in the day' and often enjoy the DJ and the tunes so much that I wouldn't head out to clubs. Their music policy was very much anything goes and everything flows ... and I loved it!

I still try to get to McChuills on occasions but have to admit that it has been years since I've hung out in Sauchiehall Street. The ABC used to be my main reason for heading up that way. It really has left a gaping wound in that part of Glasgow.

On to my mix. We start with a Ray Mang original followed by a mix, then Groove Armada mixed by Greg Wilson and the band then creating some euphoric pop with Mutya from Sugababes.

If you're a regular visitor to my blog then you'll know I love a good cover version, so we then have 2 recent discoveries of covers of Bowie's Heroes and Black Box's Ride On Time.

The mix then veers off a little with Caribou's super chilled Home, going down an 00's indie route with Peter, Bjorn and John followed by The Drums. Staying in the 00's we move back into electronic music with the dreamy Empire Of The Sun, disco heaven from Phoenix, the hands in the air and punch the sky ecstatic goodness of Justice vs Simian that was a monster tune in The Arches for a while, before closing with Australia's Cut Copy and a classic from New Order's Technique album.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 24

This months 60-minute mix/playlist starts with an incredible song by Peter Gordon & Love of Life Orchestra. I first heard this song on a James Murphy/DFA Fabric mix album I bought. What a song and what a way to open a set. I pinched the idea from them! At almost 9-minutes long this really takes listeners on a journey!

Tim Burgess from The Charlatans released an album with Peter Gordon back in 2016 and when thinking of a Charlatans track that could follow, I thought Scorched might work pretty well. I think it does - do you?

Suicide follow, super cool and edgy, then New Order kick in big time. Then there is a double dose of Prince magic. Controversy is my favourite Prince song, it's arranged like a remix - incredible!

It's Alright, I Feel It is beautifully uplifting, the Prince Language remix of LCD's 45:33 is sublime and this mix ends with two hands in the air belters.

Enjoy this mix.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 21

Welcome to my latest 60 (ish) minute mix, my 21st in the series!

I love this mix and I'm writing as I groove away in my kitchen. It eases in, there is almost a false start after the first song builds, only to go back to scratch for Fun In The Church.

The grooves in this mix are sensational. The musicianship is off the scale, the arrangements are awesome, the energy is electric - leaping out from the music and the soul is strong and true.

We have a double dose of David Axelrod, gospel, funk, soul, a number of cover versions and at the centre of the mix are 4 songs by Chairmen Of The Board from their incredible Skin I'm In album from 1974. I have Andrew Divine (a real DJ in Glasgow!) to thank for turning me on to this sensational album. What a run of songs!!! When that if it feels good it's alright vocal kicks in ..... WOW!

Hoping to get to Andrew's night at the CCA on Feb 25th.

Ending with the soul shaking, spine tingling, rip roaring I Can Feel Your Love by Felice Taylor. I hope you enjoy this 'mix'.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 19

Welcome to my last 60-minute mix of 2022. I've gone a little over, I was really enjoying putting this one together and didn't want to stop. This is one that could have gone on and the last song maybe hints at the direction I could have gone down.

Hammond grooves, funky beats, wah wah guitars, super cool bass, euphoric horns ... I'm really pleased with this one. I was intending for it to be pretty chilled after a rather manic year, but it's still got a groove.

Thanks for checking my monthly mixes. They are the most popular feature on my blog!

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 18

This months 60(ish) minute mix goes all in. My aim from this mix is to make people smile or dance. Ideally both! The weather has turned, the cost of living crisis has gripped the country, the Tories still don't give a flying f**k and today it has been absolutely chucking it down.

So here are some tunes to make you feel all warm inside.

We kick off with the sublime orchestration of The Love Unlimited Orchestra and then we're straight into the tune that The Chemical Brothers would regularly open DJ sets with. Wait until the beats and strings kick in at 2  minutes!

Going Back To My Roots is one of my all-time favourites but I usually play the Ritchie Havens version. Then it's a couple of stone cold soul stompers, the wonder of Stevie, extended mixes and Dimitri re-edits of some all time favourites, followed by Candi Staton & Whitney Houston classics to finish

I hope you enjoy this mix/playlist as much as I've enjoyed creating it.

As always in this regular feature, this mix stems from pre-club nights I used to go to at The Variety Bar or McChuills in Glasgow. Two amazing bars where the DJ's would (and still do) have free license to take people on a journey with the motto Anything Goes and Everything Flows.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ Mix 17

Welcome to my 17th 60-minute mix where I try and capture the vibe from pre-club nights I used to attend in my younger days at the likes of The Variety Bar & McChuills in Glasgow.

This mix might have a late afternoon/early evening in McChuills kind of vibe. Old Nick would be behind the bar pulling all kinds of cd's out and just going with the flow.

Kicking off with a 12 minute live groove from Donny Hathaway and his band, you are in for a treat with that song alone, never mind the full mix! Hathaway announces he is going to break the song/groove down into 4-movements, allowing each of his band to a chance to shine, a chance for them all to stretch out.

It's a stunner. I love the way piano really takes things a little higher, a little further at around the 3-minute mark and then brings it all back .... then Donny introduces 'the second movement y'all' allowing his guitarist to go for it. Wait for the bass groove though!!!! 'That sounds pretty good y'all!'

I remember getting this album for a fiver from FOPP many years ago, it's been great to revisit it.

Betty Davis' Hangin' Out features, possibly for the 3rd time in one of these mixes. I keep coming back to this song. It's super cool and funky with a catchy chorus.

Elsewhere, most of these songs are new discoveries over the last month or so. God I love music and having the time to explore different artists and sounds.

Anything Goes & Everything Flows DJ mix 16

Hello and welcome to my 16th 60-minute DJ mix where I apply the philosophy that Anything Goes & Everything Flows, attempting to create a mix that would go down well in the likes of The Variety & McChuills.

Those 2 bars were scene for many a memorable night 'back in the day' and I'd often prefer to just stay in the bars all night listening to the DJ there rather than go to a club.

I do focus on soul and funk this month, trying to create a real groove (easy when you're playing Sly & The Funk Brothers) but also providing some euphoric moments courtesy of The M.V.P.'s (pretty sure I first heard this song in McChuills at a Friday Street preclub), a sensational cover by Peggy Lee and the irresistable soul pop of The Jackson 5.

I hope you enjoy this mix. Search for Everything Flows DJ Mix 16 on Spotify or CLICK HERE
